Will UFC Fans Embrace The New Bantamweight Division At UFC 132?
UFC has announced that Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber will headline the July 2 event, UFC 132. It's a bold step for the company to take since most casual UFC viewers will have little knowledge of either fighter going in.
Faber will be much more well-known than Cruz because he has marketing deals and does commercials with Kenny Powers from "Eastbound and Down."
Cruz probably resents Faber a little bit because while he was winning all of his fights, Faber was the guy who WEC fans fawned over.
These men were two of the biggest fighters, name wise, in WEC. In UFC, they are just two guys who are fighting for a championship on a show. Give credit to UFC for taking the chance and putting them in the main event of a show.
The company has loaded the card with stars underneath the main event. Guys like B.J. Penn, Wanderlei Silva and Tito Ortiz all have fights on the card, so that will stir up general interest in the show.
But the show will be a success or failure depending on how strong UFC is able to build up Faber and Cruz. It shouldn't be too hard to do so, because these two men genuinely don't like each other.
In an interview with Bleacher Report, Cruz addressed some of the things that Faber has said about him.
"You can't make everybody like you," Cruz said. "He's playing the card of 'Dominick chose me as his enemy' y'know, whatever."
Meanwhile, Faber had some choice words for Cruz after his victory over Eddie Wineland at UFC 128. He told Cruz to "hide his wife, hide his kids" because he was coming after him.
It's fitting that this fight will be the first main event of all the "new" main events that they could do because these two men have a history, they have a story behind them and it will be a very easy fight to sell to a massive audience.
This fight between Cruz and Faber for the UFC bantamweight championship will be the one to show all the "UFC-only" fans what the WEC was all about when it goes down in July.
