How long will it take for Sid the Kid to win a Stanley Cup?
You know the time will come in the near future.
It took Vincent Lecavalier six years to accomplish the feat. Lecavalier was also a former Rimouski Oceanic, the same team Crosby took to the Memorial Cup in junior hockey days.
Lecavalier is now leading the NHL with 63 points in just 44 games. Crosby is hot on his heals with 59 points in 43 games.
Being Crosby’s third year in the NHL, you can’t help but wonder when Sid’s Kids will bring a Stanley Cup back to Pittsburgh.
What a great success story this would be for the Pens with an all-star lineup of young guns like Stall, Malone, Armstrong, Malkin, Whitney, and Letang. I know I gave Marc-Andre some flack in my last column but he is still a pretty good goalie and will be for years to come.
This will be like the good ol' days of hockey—the last time a team had this much firepower in was back in the 80’s with the Oiler's dynasty.
If the new CBA and salary cap has brought back the old days of run-and-guns hockey, then I am all for a solid young team like that of the famed Oiler’s dynasty.
Gretzky scored 92 goals in 80 games in the 1981-82 season and finished with a total of 212 points.
Will we ever see that kind of point production again by a player in the NHL?
Probably not, but with the likes of Alexander Ovechkin signing a 13-year extension and once Sid’s Kids start firing on all cylinders, we might come close.
The question is how long will it take for Sid’s Kids to win not one, but multiple Stanley Cups for the Pittsburgh Penguins?

2 years is a good guess. J/W how long was Gretzky an Oiler before they won a cup, it took Vinnie 6 years but I think Oilers began their run Very shortly after Gretzky started playing
Pens may win as early as next year, I think, if Fleury has breakout season and plays like everyone expected him to when he was drafted, I think they are only really one defender away from a cup run.

it took Gretzky 5 years to win the cup, though the Oilers made the finals the year before. the islanders swept them in 4 though.

Gretzky's first NHL season was 1979-80
Gretzky first won the Stanley Cup in 1983-84
The Oilers made it to the finals in 1982-83 but were swept by the Islanders
Gretzky also played a season for the Oilers in the WHA in 1978-79 - but clearly the team was not eligible for the Stanley Cup in the WHA so I don't think that would be counted against him.
Short answer: 4 seasons

I agree Paul, If they had one more solid stay at home Defensemen that can be a horse and play 20min a game for them it would help out HUGE! So, will it be a underachievement if Crosby doesn't win in 2-3 years?

thanks for ansering Jason and Josh that's about what I thought but wasn't sure.
J that is a good question I am not devoted Pittsburgh fan, although I have long admired and respected the franchise through its highs and lows, so I would be inclined to give Crosby 4-5 yrs to lead them to a cup. However after their surprising success last season and the fact the team overachieved(IMO) as far as play and development went I would guess fans would be disappointed if they don't go far into playoffs this season or even to the final, and really upset if Crosby doesn't win in 2-3 years.
In fairness to Sid the Kid and the pressures he is under with constant comparisions though I would as a pseudo fan if he beat Lemieux's record in leading Pittsburgh to a cup. I may be wrong but I think it took Mario 10-12 yrs to get a ring(course he didn't have all the help Crosby has for most of those years).

Mario won it in his 7th year. but yes played on alot of bad teams before that. Pens currently sit tied for 6th in the league.

all thnis discussion may be moot as Sid is out indefinitely I hope Pens can hold fort (place in standings) til his return

Crosby likely won't get a cup until he gets a new goaltender (Fleury's not gonna cut it, I don't think) and until he gets help on defense. Malkin's going to be the Messier to his Gretzky, as much as I hate to say it. I'd still take Messier and Gretzky over Malkin and Crosby though.
I'm not sure Malkin's not the better all around player. Am I a blasphemer?
