2011 NBA Mock Draft: Wizards Go International to Land Nikola Mirotic at No. 19
Mired in rebuilding mode, the Wizards take a chance on Montenegro big man Nikola Mirotic midway through the 1st round
Mirotic takes home the honor of being the first European prospect you most likely have never heard of.
At 6-10, he needs to add about 30 pounds to his frame before being anywhere near ready to play in the NBA.
The 20 year-old most likely would remain in Spain for another season of pro ball at minimum before making the jump to the NBA.
That might be enough to scare some teams off, especially with Ricky Rubio still not ready to leave the comfy confines of the Euroleague.
So who is this Mirotic character?
According to draftexpress.com, he wasn't expected to play a big role on Real Madrid this season playing behind former NBA player Jorge Garbajosa on a loaded roster.
Instead, he has been a productive player off the bench and drawn rave reviews from NBA scouts.
Don't be shocked if the Wizards gamble on a long-shot at No. 19.
Pro Projection: Without having seen Mirotic in person, it's difficult to be 100 percent confident in any projection.
Will he be the next Darko Milicic? We certainly hope not.
His physical traits have drawn comparisons to Pau Gasol, in terms of his remarkable footwork and impressive range.
As basketball fans know all too well, when a 20 year-old has range and agility, he has the ability to earn millions right away in the NBA.
Don't expect him to come to the states for a couple years, but when he shows up Mirotic should have an impact at the pro level.
