Cup holders Spain were the first major surprise after being held to a hard fought Group D 3-3 draw at the hands of lowly ranked Iran. Uruguay were also held to the same scoreline by equally unsung Libya.
Argentina lead Group C easily, winning their opener versus the weak Chinese 5-0. Group B is lead by Italy who have won all three of their matches in stark contrast to U.S.A., who have lost all three of theirs—to Paraguay (5-0), Italy (6-1), and even to rank underdogs Thailand (5-3).
Group A features the host nation Brazil, who have shown anything but discretion in their first three group matches, massacring all-comers. Brazil have scored an unbelievable 40 goals in their first three group matches, conceding only one. Europe's Russia was last to fall victim to a 7-0 trouncing, with Japan scoring the lone goal against Brazil in their 12-1 affair.
Brazil will only come up against top notch competition the likes of Spain, Italy, Uruguay and Argentina in the later stages and only time will tell if they have peaked too early or can keep this up and go all the way to their fourth Futsal World Cup.
