UFC Results: "The Korean Zombie" Wows Fans, Makes History with Move
Chan Sung Jung leads off Fight Night 24 with a bang
Phil Davis may have been on the featured bout, but it was Chan Sung Jung who stole the show.
The Korean fighter was fighting in the first televised bout of the night and gave fans a treat, becoming the first fighter in UFC history to use the twister to defeat Leonard Garcia at UFC's Fight Night 24 on Saturday at Key Arena in Seattle.
It marked the UFC debut for Jung, a former WEC fighter, who was facing Garcia in a rematch of their entertaining WEC bout from last year. Garcia was hyped to get a rematch with Nam Phan, who he was originally supposed to fight. Phan got injured and then discovered his replacement would be Jung.
"Eighty percent of me wants to go out and pick up where we left off," Garcia said to ESPN.com's Brett Okamoto entering the fight.
"The other 20 percent wants to show people how I've evolved. This fight is like one of those where the stars align and it's time for us to go again. I'd love to have something you had with Micky Ward and Arturo Gatti in boxing, where the rematch is better than the first."
The two were tenative early on Saturday night, but Jung - nicknamed "The Korean Zombie" - quickly took control near the end of the first round after Garcia missed on a huge punch. They kept trying to land a knockout punch in the second, but Garcia slipped and Jung took advantage.
Garcia tried to roll over, but Jung got position and tried a rear-naked choke, but lost position. That's when he then went for the twister, pulled it off perfectly and got Garcia to tap out with a second left in the first.
USA Today reporter Sergio Non wrote that the move had been done before: Shayna Baszler, a female fighter, did it against Keiko Tamai in April 2008 on an EliteXC card that was on Showtime. Baszler did it again against Megumi Yabushita in January, 2010, on a small fight card in Oklahoma.
