Hello Bleachers, Andre Harrison back at it once again with another column, to do with WrestleMania 27 and the buildup towards it, as we're now only eight days away from the biggest show of the year (at the time of writing).
In this column, I'm going to take a look at Smackdown's main event for the show, and that's the World Heavyweight Championship match between Edge and Alberto Del Rio...for now at least.
As you all probably know, Alberto Del Rio earned this Championship opportunity by winning the 2011 Royal Rumble, while Edge won the World Heavyweight Championship for the 11th time by defeating Dolph Ziggler on Smackdown four weeks ago. (Ridiculous, I know..)
But for the buildup for this match, there's been a third party that's been a major part of this feud for a good month or more now. People thought he may have something to do with the World Title picture after Edge gave Dolph Ziggler the Killswitch at their 2011 Royal Rumble Match, and they were proved to be right when he returned at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view in February. Of course, I'm talking about Christian.
Ever since his return, he's been associated with his former Tag Team partner and World Champion, Edge, dealing with Del Rio and his former NXT Rookie, now Smackdown superstar, Brodus Clay. In that time, he's also wrestled Del Rio twice, once in a Steel Cage Match on last week's Smackdown and in a regular match that stole the show on yesterday's Smackdown.
Now, this is an interesting situation to be in if you're looking at the feud from a creative standpoint. Christian pinned the No. 1 Contender cleanly and is undefeated in 2011 since his return...So do you put Captain Charisma in the World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 27 next Sunday?
There's a good argument for and against this. As said before, Christian has pinned the No. 1 Contender before in competition and is now 3-0 for matches in 2011. He's constantly been involved with the World Champion, Edge, and his quality of wrestling has been superb since his return.
For the first time since his comeback to the WWE in January 2009, Christian has looked like a genuine main event level superstar, and his return has definitely pushed him up the ladder. And I don't know about you, but a Triple Threat between Edge, Del Rio and Christian certainly excites a little bit more, as Edge winds down his singles career, and Christian can cover for it and raise the quality a tad.
However, there's potentially more from a booking standpoint if they DON'T put him in the match? Imagine if Christian was in Edge's corner, and Christian turns heel on Edge out of frustration, for being left out of the match? An Edge-Christian feud with a heel in there would be very entertaining to watch. There was an Edge-Christian singles match on RAW last year that was a great tease of what they COULD do given the time and effort (***3/4 Stars from me), and it's something we on the Internet Wrestling Community constantly seem to bring up.
Or, you could put the World Championship on Christian by putting him the match and have Edge be the heel he's so good at...intriguing eh?
There's so many options that could take place from a storyline perspective here, and that's a great thing, so it leads to intrigue and a lot of questions heading into this main event. What do you all think? Should Christian be in the main event? Shouldn't he? Why?
Let me know your thoughts in the comments. I've been Andre Harrison, and that was your analysis, thanks for reading, and Sayonara!
