NCAA Tournament Results, Scores: Complete Sweet 16 Live Blog
I'm Jack Winter, B/R's Kansas basketball Featured Columnist and NCAA tournament addict.
I took you through the first five hours of 2011's March Madness last Thursday, considered by many—myself included—to be the best afternoon of college basketball in recent memory.
Since then the field has whittled down to 16 teams. Blue-bloods like Duke, Kansas and Kentucky remain, as well as multiple Cinderellas, headlined by the pride of Richmond, Va., the Rams of VCU and Spiders of RU.
Sweet 16 action kicks off with San Diego State and Connecticut at 7:15 p.m. ET, followed shortly by BYU and Florida at 7:27 p.m.
The marquee matchup of the night is a rematch of the 2001 title game—fifth-seeded Arizona versus top-seeded Duke—and will follow the game between the Aztecs and Kemba Walker's Huskies.
Tonight's action ends with 2010 national runner-up Butler versus the Badgers of Wisconsin.
Great, great night of basketball. I'm signing off. Thanks for reading!
BU-WISC: Dawgs win. A Cinderella, no more. Sets up a date with Florida on Saturday.
BU-WISC: That's an NBA move, Shelvin. Comes off the curl screen with the ball, hits a step-back from 16 feet over Leur. Dawgs appear in good shape again, up seven with 40 seconds left.
BU-WISC: Wow. Dawgs up just four now, 53-49, with 1:29 left after two bad TOs and Wisconsin capitalizing. Good thing I stayed up.
BU-WISC: Butler up just nine with 2:15 left. They're still okay obviously, but its getting dangerously close.
BU-WISC: The Dawgs are slowly wrapping this one up, leading 52-40 with 3:56 left.
BU-WISC: There's an absolutely pathetic crowd for this game. Embarrassing.
ZONA-DUKE: Cats win going away, 93-77. If they play like this, I'm not sure who they lose to. Sets up an awesome matchup with UCONN on Saturday.
ZONA-DUKE: Coach K just took Singler and Smith out for the ovation. Pretty shocking. There were two minutes left, coach. You can put five awesome three point shooters on the floor. Why are you giving up down 15 with 2:00 left? Weak. That said, I'm totally psyched about it.
Both these games appear over. UA up 92-74 with 2:01 left, Butler leads 49-32 with 7:34 left.
BU-WISC: Meanwhile, Butler is blowing out Wisconsin. The Dawys are up 20 and have 47 points – I'll be shocked if the Badgers even get to that number.
ZONA-DUKE: Arizona looks absolutely unbelievable. Its no just Williams anymore; everyone is getting in on the act. If they play like this, I'm not sure who can beat them. They're up 82-68 with 5:01 left.
ZONA-DUKE: The fix might be in. Refs trying to get Duke back in the game. Three fouls in thirty seconds on UA, plus a no-call on Singler's obvious fifth foul. It was also after a timeout. Wonder what Coach K had to say...
ZONA-DUKE: Sequence: Horne offensive board on left block. Fakes out to the perimeter. Turns back. Takes a step. Hammers over Singler. Seriously, shades of Jordan on Ewing.
ZONA-DUKE: JAMELLE HORNE! HE WENT MJ/EWING ON SINGLER! OH MY GOD!
BU-WISC: The Dawgs are just shellacking Wisconsin. 40-24 with 15:30 left.
ZONA-DUKE: Another huge dunk for Williams. Ho-hum. He's good at basketball.
ZONA-DUKE: UA is playing out of their minds. Getting everything they want on offense and holding the Devils to terrible shots on the other end. 71-61 Zona with 8:00 left.
ZONA-DUKE: Cats in the bonus on a bogus foul call on Singler. Oh yeah, its his fourth foul.
BU-WISC: Looks like just an ankle for Smith. Getting taped up on the bench now.
BU-WISC: Yikes. Apparent knee injury for Andrew Smith. Hope he's alright.
ZONA-DUKE: My god. 19-2 run for UA punctuated by a steal and dunk. 66-55 with 11:20 left.
BU-WISC: Second half just tipping off. A nine point halftime lead is huge in this game. Dawgs score on their first possession, now up double-digits.
ZONA-DUKE: Block of the tournament from Mason Plumlee. Unfortunately, Zona got the call. These refs are completely inept.
ZONA-DUKE: 13-0 run by Zona. They're up 60-53. Danger time for Coach K and co.
