Does Jimmer Fredette Have to Score 50 Points to Beat Florida?

The second game that tips off tomorrow night will be a rematch of a first round match-up from last year's tournament. Jimmer Fredette and BYU beat the Florida Gators in double overtime in the first game of the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

Florida gets a chance at revenge Thursday night in New Orleans and they have quite an advantage over the Cougars. As most of you know, BYU is without Brandon Davies. However it appears to not have hurt them that much in the tournament, until now.

The Cougars handled Wofford and Gonzaga with ease to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1981. Jimmer a the main reason they've gotten this far as he is averaging 33 points per game in the big dance. He'll need to have one of those types of games again if they expect to advance to the Elite Eight.

I don't see Jimmer scoring 50 points against the SEC regular season champ. I have however predicted he will score 40 and the Cougars will win the game. Jimmer is also leading the team in assists this tournament with six per game. He does a great job of getting his teammates involved, but tomorrow night it will be the Jimmer show.

With Gus Johnson on the call you know it's going to be an exciting game. The Law of Gus will prevail tomorrow night, and I can't wait.

Aside from the game tomorrow night, Buzz Bissinger, who writes for The Daily Beast recently wrote an article on Jimmer and how his race plays a factor in basketball. He says that a team will draft Jimmer because he is white and it will fill seats in the arena.

Bissinger writes, "It's about race. It always is in America."

And to that I say no, it doesn't have to be. The reason people think it is is because of people like Mr. Bissinger proclaiming that whites are the only ones who fill seats in stadiums.

Why can't it just be about basketball? We should look past the color one's skin and focus on just the game.

Jimmer is a great athlete, and calling out the stereotype of whites and basketball by saying “"He is the next great white hope, until the not-so-dirty secret is revealed that he is too short, can't play defense, and is not quick enough. Then he will ride the bench and the arenas won't be filled anymore" is just wrong Buzz.

Give this guy a chance.
