I haven't written a piece on wrestling in a while and I saw it fitting that the next one I did also involved another "sports" love of mine: baseball. The playoffs just started in baseball and it got me to thinking, "Which MLB team is a representation of the WWE superstars?" So I compiled this list but for this submission I will only involve those teams currently in the baseball postseason and a few notable teams who aren't.
Triple H: NY Yankees
It is only fitting I start with the Bronx Bombers despite them being home at this time. The Yankees have won the most championships in baseball and which current WWE superstar has won more titles than HHH? Now this comparison would definitely go to Ric Flair but Naitch is no longer in the WWE and he wasn't going to be winning a world title anytime soon in my opinion.
Trips is the champion for the 12th time right now and just like the Yankees, when he is not champ, you know it's only a matter of time before he gets back into the picture.
Evan Bourne: Tampa Bay Rays
He came out of nowhere (for those who did not know him as Matt Sydal) and shocked the WWE world much like the current Rays did to the baseball nation. Will they ever be able to grab championship gold? That remains to be seen but they both have their respective worlds talking.
John Cena: Philadelphia Phillies
The fans in Philadelphia make this an ideal choice. Cena has tons of fans who cheer for him and then they can quickly turn to jeers. If you've been to or watched a Phillies game you can easily see why I make the correlation. Both are talented in certain aspects yet also have their shortcomings.
Jeff Hardy: Chicago Cubs
Ah, the lovable losers. The boys from Chi-town haven't won a World Series since before some of our grandparents were born. Both are tremendously popular no matter how many times they lose chasing the gold. There is always something that eventually stops the momentum whether it's a wellness policy or Steve Bartman.
Both Hardy and Cubs fans wait with bated breath for the day they eventually break the "curse" and grab the gold.
CM Punk: Florida Marlins
Anybody remember that the Marlins have won two World Series? They won in 1997 and again in 2003. And after both wins the teams were basically dismantled, cheapening the victories.
Punk was and will forever be known as a transitional champion for his first title run. The way the WWE creative team took the title off of Punk was horrible, much like what the owners did to the fans of the fish. The only difference here is that Punk has more fans than the Marlins. I know this because I am a fan of both and have been to many Marlins' games seeing as how I live around the corner from the stadium.
Chris Jericho: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

i would say charlie haas would be a better comparison for the pittsburgh pirates rather then the great khali... cuz when u look at it haas is now being used as a joke in the wwe and the pirates are a joke in the mlb and when haas used to be partners with benjamin he also used to be very talented

How about:
Brooklyn Brawler: Kansas City Royals - Both perennial losers (though the Royals seem to have the pieces in place for a run in the near future), and nobody can remember when either one was relevant. Barry Horowitz would also fit here, despite his kick a$$ "Hava Nagila" theme song
Edit Comment Cancel
Shane H. 9 months ago
oh my god I use to love seeing Horowitz. Every week I would wonder if he would finally win. That is a great comparison. I'll keep that in mind if I run down the entire league.

Hey, excellent article. Loved the Bourne-Rays comparison. I'm trying to think of someone for the Mets. Perhaps MVP? Seems like he would go far yet never does
Edit Comment Cancel
Shane H. 9 months ago
I kind of like that comparison of MVP and the Mets (even though MVP is Mr. 305 from Miami and the Mets are a division rival of the Marlins). Porter and the Mets are talented yet always seem to fall when they are close to the brink.

What about the SF Giants. Who compares to them?
Edit Comment Cancel
Shane H. 9 months ago
Hmm, the Giants huh? Kane I'm thinking. They are kind of a veteran team far removed from their glory years but they still have some talented individuals. Kane can still have decent matches. They've been involved in controversy, Kane= Katie Vick angle, Giants= Barry Bonds. And both were a formidable force in the late 90s, early 2000s before falling off.

Good Article ...The Red Sox should have been chris jericho he has the prestige hes been wrestling for years never won the heavy weigh title until the 2000's like the red sox with the world series but the guy has a long history in the wrestling business much like the red sox .... Heres one of the list ...
Shawn Micheals : Atlanta Braves
Always made the playoffs until last year and the braves were awesome in the mid to late 90's much like shawn Micheals

well you defenetley know your baseball and it was an interesting read atleast but you don't know your wrestling that well. The peole who boo cena are not his fans angry, they are people who hate john cena and he gets boo'd out every arena he's in. Also THE Brian Kendrick should have been the pick for those similarities for Tampa Bay Rays. aaand.......i guess in your opinion there is no greatest baseball team of all time or else you would have compared them to Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair and Stone Cold Steve Austin
Edit Comment Cancel
Shane H. 9 months ago
Bourne is way more popular than Kendrick and is getting more national exposure. Hence why I chose him for the Rays. ESPN finally talked about the Rays this year and it wasn't b/c they suck. Kendrick is up and coming but not at Bourne's status, that's why I went there... I was going for current wrestlers which is why I excluded Flair and Austin. I did say I would have given Flair to the Yankees. But thanks for the input, I welcome them all

Well you definitely know your baseball and it was an interesting read at least, but I can't say that your any where near enough a wrestling expert to be writing this article. The people who boo John Cena are not his fans angry, they are people who hate John Cena insanely because he has no wrestling talent in any of the category's other then he is willing to work hard, and he gets boo'd out every arena he's in. Ask anybody in the business and that's what they'll tell you. Unless it's Scott Steiner, "Adam Bomb" or Hulk Hogan, who don't even count as wrestlers. Also THE Brian Kendrick should have been the pick for those similarities for Tampa Bay Rays. That kid came out of no where! Out of his shell like a rocket! He's a Fire Cracker! The next HUGE million dollar talent if WWE uses him right, which I doubt they will because since they changed the name to WWE signifying Vince McMahon's senile'ness, they can't do much of anything right. Kendrick is amazing in every category except his weight class, he needs to beef up and he'll have it made. I'm not saying start juicing because I don't agree with it. Also I guess in your opinion there is no greatest baseball team of all time or else you would have compared them to Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

i'm a person who use to love Cena, the rap gimmick was funny and cool. but i can't stand the Cena that creative shoves down our throat now so i boo. this is the same with a few other people i talk to in the wrestling community... i said he's talented, i never said it was in the ring.

Great article. Just one tiny problem. It's a common one too. Lots of people don't understand the definition of the phrase "transitional champion." Punk's reign ended in poor fashion but he wasn't a transitional champion.

I'm gonna have to go with Edge as The Phillies though.
Jut when you think there no going to make it or make a comeback thry surprise everyone.
Edge and The Phillie are both workhorses and with the Phillies talen winning MVP 2 years in a row, Howard and Jimmy Rollins, it' an easy comparison to Edge.
Everyone rant and raves about Triple H, rightfully o and Undertaker, and CM Punk, but like The Phillies talent, Ede has a hell of alot talent and the Phillies have the same and have been known as edgy for years.
Does anyone remember The 1993 Phillies? They were all "the Dudes" John Kruk, Lenny Dykstra, and Darren Daulton, if anyone fit that look and bill it' Edge not John Cena.
The gruffy blue collar hard working type.
And lastly for my point, look no further then Philllies Outfielder Jason Werth.
If you know who he is then you will agree he's a dead ringer for Edge.
I mean spliting image could be twin brother image of Edge.
So I gotta ay Edge is The Phillies seeing there's a player who looks just like him on he team, plus all the other stuff I mentioned.

As both an ECW and Baltimore O's fan, great comparison. The O's haven't won a World Series since I was 1, but the hardcore fans cheer them on year in, year out. We hope we can see the O's of yester-year, the same we the true ECW fans hope that one day we'll see the true ECW. I think I have a better chance of seeing the O's make the playoffs in my lifetime, though.

Thanks for going back and looking at this one.
The real reason why I loved this piece (other than the fact that wrestling sites picked it up) was the fact that this piece spawned so many spin-offs. I did WWE/NBA players, WWE/Fairy Tales, another writer in the WC did the same thing with WWE/MLB players (that wasn't cool), someone did WWE/NFL, WWE/Presidential Candidates, I've seen MMA/Super Heroes..
I can pride myself knowing that I begun all of that.
