WWE Still Shying Away from the Term 'Wrestling'

Last week, a TV industry news site, TVWeek.com, ran a story on Drew Carey's induction into the WWE Hall of Fame and used this headline: "Drew Carey Inducted Into Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame. Huh? Drew Carey??!!"

And apparently it really angered WWE publicist Kellie Baldyga, who, according to TVWeek.com, sent an email to the site that read: "We are no longer a wrestling company but rather a global entertainment company with a movie studio, international licensing deals, publisher of three magazines, consumer good distributor and more."

In a later phone conversation, Baldyga also added,"No, we don't do wrestling events. They're entertainments. And we don't call them wrestlers. They're superstars and divas."

Alright, I get that marketing your product with specific, exclusive terms might be smart business decisions.

But Vince McMahon and the WWE's ban on the use of any word involving the root word "wrestle" is absolutely ridiculous.

I mean, really? They're not wrestlers? Then, what do you call what they do inside the wrestling ring?

Are they superstarring? Or divaing?

Believe it or not, Vince, there are people who aren't members of the "WWE Universe" or fans of "sports entertainment."

They're "wrestling fans," through and through.

Again, like I said, advertising your product(s) as something unique makes a ton of sense-business wise. But sending an email to a news site that probably has no one on staff who actually watches wrestling and then calling them out on it is absolutely ridiculous.

That site can call it "wrasslin" if it really wants to.

Just because you've trademarked the terms "WWE Unverse" and "sports entertainment" doesn't mean you have a monopoly over the entire entertainment business.

Even if you think you do.
