Markos Geneti of Ethiopia Breaks L.A. Marathon Record
Many obstacles had to be dealt with over the course of the Los Angeles Marathon. Not only did everybody have to compete amongst themselves, but they had to compete with the elements as well.
From Los Angeles to Santa Monica, the winds continued to pick up and the rain went from a drizzle to a major obstacle.
Nonetheless, that did not stop Ethiopia's Markos Geneti from making his presence known. The 26-year-old not only broke the record at the marathon, but shattered it by running a time of 2 hours, 6 minutes, and 35 seconds.
The previous record? In 2009, Wesley Korir ran a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 24 seconds.
Geneti was able to pull this off through consistency. At mile 22, he had a mile time of 5:24. At mile 23, it was 4:44 and at mile 24 it was 4:58. Keeping those times consistently good without showing signs of slowing down is key in any marathon.
As for the women, the winner amongst them with a time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 34 seconds was Bizunesh Deba, also of Ethiopia, a 23-year-old who made her L.A. Marathon debut this year. She had previously run in the New York Marathon in 2009 and the St. Paul Marathon in 2010.
