The Longhorns had a bad season in 2010; there is no doubt about that.
They clearly went under any expectations that fans and the media had for them and didn’t show up after their visit to the BCS title game against Alabama.
There have been many reasons given and many fingers pointed as to why the Longhorns stumbled last season, but it’s time to bury all that and look ahead towards what can happen next season.
Texas brings back a lot of the same guys from last season and the good thing is that it’s going to be an experienced group, especially on offense, and they should be able to be much better than they were last year.
We all look for that one individual player that would stick out in a crowd and play above standards on his team. Last season the Longhorns didn’t have a guy that really stood out as a star on the team. Aaron Williams had a pretty nice season, but there wasn’t one single player that everyone was raving about by the time the season was done.
Will there be someone like that this year? Is there that one guy on the team that is going to step up and shine and make a name for himself?
There is one guy that needs to step it up and play much better in the coming season, but can he be that star that we are talking about?
That one guy is quarterback Garrett Gilbert.
Gilbert’s first season as a starter with the Longhorns was a rocky one, but as the season wore on we did see some improvement. With last year's experience and a lot of additional time during the offseason learning the offense, it’s possible that Gilbert could be much better prepared for next season.
The quarterback position has become a key focal point of the Texas Longhorns over the past few seasons and has included such collegiate greats as Vince Young and Colt McCoy under center.
These two players helped make the Longhorns program one of the best in the last decade and proved that having a good quarterback is exactly what you need to get far in college football.
So after a less than stellar season in 2010, is it time that Gilbert finally got things put together and finally becomes the quarterback that Texas thought he could be when they recruited him?
It’s a definite possibility, and Gilbert has to produce or the Longhorns aren’t going to go anywhere.
So if there is going to be someone that steps up this year, it would be great if it was Gilbert. The Longhorns need that star and that leader on the team, and if it can be the quarterback that would be the best option for Texas.
Who do you think will step up and star for the Longhorns in 2011?
