NCAA Tournament 2011: Jimmer Fredette Poised to End Gonzaga's Cinderella Bid
Can Jimmer Fredette end Gonzaga’s NCAA Tournament run early?
Who’s the 11 seed again?
The Gonzaga Bulldogs have won eleven games in a row and will be trying to advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the fifth time in the past 13 years.
The Cougars meanwhile, are undersized, underperforming, and trying to advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 1981.
I think the question is more aptly phrased: How does BYU win this game?
The Cougars are at their best when they’re running the floor. According to their Yahoo! Scouting report, “getting solid inside play would be a boost,” but against the sizable Gonzaga frontline that seems unlikely. Plus, BYU has lacked much bite on the interior since top post player Brandon Davies was suspended for the year due to an “honor code violation.”
If the Cougars are able to hang in there on the glass (a big if), they’ll have a chance to win this on the back of Fredette.
If they get beat up inside and concede second chance points? Well, then, the result will probably be something inline with the 72-54 shellacking they received from San Diego State in the Mountain West Conference championship.
The X-factor here is Fredette (so far as the most well-known player in the nation can be an X-factor. My editor suggested: 'A-factor.') The BYU A-factor leads the country at 28.6 points per game, and is probably the Tournament’s most likely participant to go for 50.
A big game from the Jimmer, and I suppose anything is possible.
But if he’s not up to form, Gonzaga will be tough to beat.
