NCAA Tournament Scores: Scrappy Oakland Hanging in Against Texas
NCAA Tournament Scores Start Off With Another Close Game As The Texas Longhorns Take On Oakland
Coming into the Tournament and all week long, the experts believed that this could be a tough game for the Texas Longhorns in the Round of 64 because of the matchup problems Oakland represented with big man Keith Benson and his physicality inside.
But so far, while the Longhorns have played pretty well, the Golden Grizzlies have hung around with the Longhorns, trailing 46-38 at halftime. For Oakland, Benson has been pretty strong, scoring six points to go along with four rebounds. But Oakland is getting a strong performance from Reggie Williams, who leads the team with 10 points and has hit a couple of key threes.
Meanwhile the favored Longhorns have to be pleased with the games that young studs Jordan Hamilton and Tristan Thompson have had. Hamilton had nine points at the half to go along with six rebounds, while Thompson also had nine points and three blocks to boot.
We all know that Texas is a very talented team rife with Division I talent and possibly two first round draft picks in this June's NBA Draft. But they also know that if the Longhorns want to live up to the expectations, Hamilton and Thompson have to lead the charge and be dynamic players on both sides of the ball.
Oakland deserves a lot of credit for hanging around at the half and they have the players to make life difficult for the Longhorns in the second half. But with Hamilton and Thompson playing as well as they have so far, it will make it a lot tougher.
Not just for Oakland, but for the West region as well.
