UFC 128: Shogun Delivers Hardest Strike Ever Recorded by ESPN Sports Science Lab
Mauricio "Shogun" Rua will step into the Octagon against Jon "Bones" Jones at UFC 128 on Saturday March 19 in Newark, New Jersey. On the line will be Rua's UFC light heavyweight title.
Rua is recognized as one of the most effective strikers in the world of mixed martial arts, he recently travelled to the ESPN Sports Science lab to see just how powerful his striking is. And the answer to that question is, "Shogun" delivered the heaviest strike the lab ever recorded.
Rua was fitted with a series of sensors and then unleashed on a 300-pound heavy bag.
Rua's punching power was measured at 25 MPH, hitting the bag with 1,169 pounds of force.
Rua's kick was measure next. His leg speed was measured at 39 MPH with a force of 2,749 pounds. For comparison, Cain Velasquez delivered a punch that was measured at 2,230 pounds of force, and when the ESPN crew measured Velasquez's takedown force it was 2,700 pounds, still below Rua's kick.
As Rua said, "I can kick you very hard. The goal is KO."
Note to Jon Jones, stay away from the kicks of "Shogun."
