(previous: 12) The big winners of the week, the Nittany Lions had a "whiteout" against Illinois and took care of business. Though much like Oklahoma, I'm still unsure about the relative quality of PSU--they could be anywhere between #5 and #11 at this point.

Beating Illi by two touchdowns was big, if they play that way no one in the Big 10 will stop them from winning the conference.

Good defense and good offense means very good team. Odds on favorite to go too the Rose Bowl.

Nicholas Pardini #5
With Wisconsin losing to Michigan, Penn State looks like the best team in the Big Ten. They also won their first tough game against Illinois.

Joe Bleacher #5
Very dynamic offense with a strong offensive line. Defense did well against Illinois considering their potent offense.

Jesse Monday #5
After proving themselves against a Big Ten school it is very easy to take this offense seriously. Ohio State no longer has its firm grasp on the Big Ten.

Josh Rosenberg #5
The defense for the first time is the second best part of this team. With the emergence of run-pass threat Darryll Clark, the spread offense is up and running again and vaults them into and almost certain BCS berth.

Ryan Gemmell #5
Very dynamic offense with a strong offensive line. Defense did well against Illinois considering their potent offense.

Not sure who I'd pick if they played Texas head-to-head tomorrow... but now they've been tested. The Horns haven't. So I put PSU one peg ahead.

Penn State looks to be a favorite to win the Big Ten, as long as they can get by Ohio State at the horse shoe.

The Nittany Lions got a quality win and looked good on primetime television doing it.

Part of me really wants to see Joe Pa win the Big Ten beat the Pac 10 representative at the "Granddaddy" and call it a career. That's the stuff movies are made of.

Another team who silenced their critics was Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions, who dominated Illinois for an impressive 38-24 victory, but they will have to wait to crack the top five until they go to Wisconsin in two weeks.

I am putting Penn St. up here for now but I believe they will stub their toe one time this year...not sure which game but I just don't see them getting through at 12-0. Even if they do and they play in the BCS title game, I believe they will prove to be about as competitive as Ohio St. has been in big bowls. I actually think Ohio St. has a chance to beat them this year. But keeping with the common trend, due to upsets and their record they are number 6 for now...

Good win over an up and down Illinois team. Big games with Ohio State and Wisconsin coming up.
