Dwyane Wade Awarded Sole Custody of His Two Sons on Friday

After being mired in a five-game losing streak that caused something of a national freakout, Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat seem to have found their mojo again. The Heat have won three in a row, the latest of which was a 30-point beatdown of the NBA-best San Antonio Spurs on Monday.

Wade has been particularly good in the Heat's last two games, scoring 29 points against the Spurs and 28 points against the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday. In retrospect, this may have something to do with the fact that Wade scored a pretty major victory in his personal life this past Friday.

After a fairly lengthy battle, a Chicago court awarded Wade sole custody of his two sons on Friday. And according to the Miami Herald, Wade thinks that having the issue in the rearview mirror is going to make a difference on the court.

“I heard the best news I could possibly hear,” Wade said. “So I was like, ‘I’m going to go out there and play free and enjoy it.’”

Wade filed for divorce from his wife, Siohvaughn Wade, back in 2007, but it did not become official until June of 2010. There were times when their situation got pretty ugly, but all that matters to Wade at this point in time is that his kids are with him in Miami.

“My life changed in a huge way,” he said. “Mentally, I’ve been preparing for it for over a year now. To me, it’s bigger than that. For me, it shows a lot of people that you need to fight to be in your kids’ lives sometimes. You fight until you can’t fight any more. That’s all I was trying to be, a father in his kids’ lives.”

The Heat are currently two games behind the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Wade was already playing at a high level before Friday's ruling, but his play in the Heat's last two games might suggest that he can be even better down the stretch.

The Heat face yet another Western power on Wednesday night when they take on the Oklahoma City Thunder. We shall see if Wade can keep it up.
