In the Southwest Region the No. 5 Kansas State Wildcats are set to take on the No. 12 Utah State Aggies in the classic upset matchup. The game is scheduled for Thursday at 9:57 ET at the McKale Center in Tucson, Arizona, and will be televised on truTV. Here is quick breakdown of each team, plus my NCAA Tournament predictions on who will come out on top in this matchup.
Our NCAA Tournament odds have Kansas State favored by just two points over Utah State, which gives you a good idea of just how possible an upset is in this game.
Kansas State: It took the Wildcats some time to get things figured out, but this is a team that really started to click offensively late in the season, and the main reason for that is senior guard Jacob Pullen, who averaged 19.6 ppg. Pullen has the ability to carry this team a long way, but if he struggles, it will be very hard for Kansas State to advance.
Kansas State finished the year 22-10 overall and tied for third in the Big 12 with a conference record of 10-6, which was pretty impressive considering they started conference play 2-5. The Wildcats lost 87-75 in their first round game against Colorado in the Big 12 Tournament, but had won six straight before that, with wins over Kansas and Missouri at home and a shocking win at Texas.
The Wildcats were pretty good in non-conference play with wins over Virginia Tech, Washington State, and Gonzaga. Their only non-conference losses came against the likes of Duke, Florida and UNLV, all teams who made the tournament.
Utah State: While you might not know a lot about the Aggies coming into the tournament, I feel like they are much better than a 12 seed. Utah State runs a ton of set plays on offense, which gets them a lot of strong looks, and defensively head coach Stew Morrill believes this is the best defensive unit he has coached.
The Aggies finished an impressive 30-3 overall, and absolutely dominated the WAC, winning both the regular season title (15-1) and the WAC Tournament. Utah State has just one lost in their last 26 games, and come into the tournament riding a eight game winning streak.
The Aggies strength of schedule isn't the greatest, but did have an impressive win at St Mary's late in the year. They lost at both BYU and Georgetown in their only other notable games.
Prediction—Utah State Wins: While the resume might not be the greatest, I think Utah State is going to shock Kansas State in the first round. I look for their intense defense to really make things hard for Pullen and the Wildcats offensively, and I look for them to do just enough offensively to win this game.
Not only do I think the Aggies have a great shot at beating the Wildcats, but don't be surprised if this team is the Cinderella of the tournament and advances to the Sweet 16.
I hope you enjoyed my NCAA Tournament picks for this game, and feel free to leave a comment on who you think will win. Good Luck with your 2011 NCAA Tournament contests this year!
