Five NHL Players to Avoid in Fantasy Pools

Jack PorterCorrespondent ISeptember 30, 2008

With fantasy pools starting up, I want to help by giving a quick list of players you should stay away from.

Nik Antropov

Despite having a career year last season, Nik will be part of a rebuilding team this season and can't be expected to repeat last year's production. Also with team captain Mats Sundin gone Nik is no longer riding the coattails of a skilled teammate.

Markus Naslund

Having signed Naslund, the Rangers believe he will regain his superstar status. Unfortunately, this will not happen.

Markus had a far from great year last season and will once again produce below average. Naslund's career is winding down and his points will follow. It will be a surprise if he even cracks the 50-point plateau this year.

Kristian Huselius

Kristian put up good numbers last year but he was playing with the likes of Alex Tanguay and Jarome Iginla. Huselius is a decent player, but I don't see him repeating this season playing with a superstar in Rick Nash. However, the next offense force below Nash his hard nosed R.J. Umberger.

Still, I could be wrong if he finds chemistry with young players Jakub Voracek and Nikta Filatov.

Sergei Gonchar

This player's inclusion in the list has nothing to do with his talent.  Sergei will go under the knife and will be out up to six months, so don't be drawn in by his past numbers. Also, stay away from teammate Ryan Whitney for similar reasons.

Rick DiPietro

Rounding out the list is goaltender Rick DiPietro. With weak knees, Rick is too fragile to be a safe pick on a fantasy team. Plus, he won't be behind the greatest defense corps ever and he should see a lot of shots this season (in the games he is healthy for).
