NIT Tournament 2011: The Focus for Saint Mary's Is on Mickey McConnell
NIT Tournament 2011 The Swan Song For Saint Mary's Mickey McConnell
In terms of draft status, Matthew Dellavedova is getting more publicity than Mickey McConnell, a senior for the Gaels.
In fact, McConnell isn't even listed in Chad Ford's list of prospects. But the senior guard, who was the West Coast Conference's Player of the Year is the guy who makes the Gaels go. He's the team's leading scorer, averaging more than 16 points per night and better than six assists per game, and it's pretty clear the Gaels are only as good as he is. When his shooting touch is on, he's hard to beat.
"He's made a big jump. As big as any we've had," Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett told the Associated Press back in January. "We've had some guys who have really improved. Omar (Samhan) really improved. But Mickey probably made the biggest jump from day one until now. As a freshman he didn't play that much and now he's one of the better players in the conference."
And if you look at the game log, it's true that the Gaels go when he goes. When he struggles to shoot, the Gaels struggle. In the West Coast Conference Final against Gonzaga, McConnell was only 5-for-11 from the field. Not a bad shooting night for most, but it was a struggle for him.
The Gaels' have produced NBA players, especially at point guard with Patty Mills and now possibly Dellavedova. It doesn't look like McConnell is going to get that chance. But when you watch the Gaels', watch for McConnell.
He's a very good shooter both in the mid-range and perimeter games, as he's shooting 50 percent from the field for the season and better than 46 percent from long-range. He also has the ability to go off for big games, like the 32 he had against Portland and the 27 he scored in a January win at Gonzaga.
Dellavedova will be the prospect that gets some attention for Saint Mary's in the NIT. But if they make a run to the Semifinals at the Garden, McConnell will be a big reason why. It'll be his last chance to shine on a big stage.
