Everybody could see this happening. It was just a matter of when and where.
The Chicago Blackhawks put Nikolai Khabibulin on waivers hoping a team would pick him up. Obviously a team will do this, but which one?
Here is a list of teams that I believe would pick up the experienced goaltender.
The Colorado Avalanche went into the offseason looking for a goaltender and somehow decided on Andrew Raycroft. With two unproven goaltenders in Peter Budaj and Raycroft trying to prove their worth, why not throw in a third goaltender in Khabibulin?
Los Angeles Kings
You know your team is hurting when you're going into the season with Jason LaBarbera as your starter. Without Nikolai Khabibulin in their lineup, unless Jonathon Bernier steps up, this team will once again be in the basement of the Western Conference.
The team has a good goaltender in Martin Gerber. He is starting material for any team. But when it comes to proving himself in the playoffs...? He has a bad resume. If the Senators have any chance of making it back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they might need to take a flier on Nikolai Khabibulin.
Tamba Bay Lightning
I know they are looking to get younger by having Mike Smith, but how can they turn down the guy that helped take them to the promised land? I think maybe Khabibulin could improve both the Lightning defense and also revive a once great career.
