Michael Vick: Philadelphia Eagles QB's Leadership Role Will Continue in 2011

Mike BurkeMar 8, 2011

When Michael Vick was moved into the starting quarterback role for the Philadelphia Eagles last season, he didn’t just take over a position: Vick took over leadership of the team.

The Eagles have a very young offense, and many offensive players grew up following Vick’s career. They saw the playmaking ability he had when he was in Atlanta, and knew they were about to get their own chance to make plays with the former first overall draft pick.

Although the Eagles defense wasn’t catching passes from Vick in 2010, they knew that Vick would make plays for them if they could get the ball back in his hands when they were trailing in a game.

Report: A.J.'s 'Best to Ever Play Here' Message

It didn’t take long for Vick to gain the respect of his teammates by his play on the field, and with his teammates behind him, we really saw Vick step up as a leader. His demeanor in the locker room was something that really impressed me, and something I look forward to seeing next season.

With all of the uncertainties surrounding next season, Vick remains focused. He wants to be in Philadelphia, and showed that by signing his franchise tender.

Of course, like anyone, Vick is searching for security in his employment with a long-term deal. It is believed that the Eagles would like to sign Vick to a long-term deal, but the expiring CBA is putting a hold on that.

However, Vick seems understanding and knows that he has to focus on this year, stating, "We just talked about what can get done this year. I think that anything else that happens is solely on me. I think I dictate that situation based on my play and performance and my actions on and off the field. So that ball is in my court."

Vick plans on going wherever he needs to go in order to workout with his teammates this offseason. He feels its "[his] responsibility this offseason is to make sure everybody comes into training camp ready to play."

As for his own play, Vick has noted that he watched Aaron Rodgers closely down the stretch. We all saw how hot Rodgers played in the playoffs, and studying a quarterback who just earned his team a Super Bowl trophy is probably a good place to start.

Say what you will about Vick, but he is really embracing the second opportunity he’s been given. He knows that he is in a great situation with all the young talent in Philadelphia, and is ready to take these young guys under his wing as they stride for a championship.
