Underestimating Hull City: My Mistake!

After seeing Hull City defy all odds and beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium, I have to say I feel rather embarrassed now that I predicted them to go down at the start of the season, labelling them the "next Derby County".

There is no way that's possible now however, as they've already beaten Derby County in terms of wins and points. Three wins and two draws from six games, including two fantastic away wins at Newcastle and now Arsenal, means Hull have already beaten Derby's total points tally from last season.

It was an amazing victory for the Tigers on Saturday, a victory that shocked the footballing world. No-one expected them to win, least of all Salaar Shamsi, who predicted the Tigers would get beaten 4-0!

But through a stunning 30-yard strike from Brazilian Geovanni, and a header from Daniel Cousin three minutes later, Hull City recorded a famous victory at the Emirates, one that will live long in the memory of all their fans.

And so it seems now, that with a bit of Brazilian magic, an ex-Rangers striker, a win at the Emirates, and more points in the league than Manchester United, Hull City could be a real force this season in the EPL, and a team to watch out for.

As I like to say, if one thing's for certain, it's that Hully City will definitely not be the "next Derby County".

A force to be reckoned with might be a bit too much praise for Hull. They've had a good start, but let's see what happens with them when the season progresses. My prediction is they will end up battling against relegation, despite their excellent start. It's a long and tough season.

i don't think they will be involved in a relegation scrap anymore. having watched the game against arsenal, and the game against newcastle, hull city look like a good team who could beat anyone on their day. also, i think they've got too many good players to really be involved in a relegation battle, as they've got the likes of geovanni, daniel cousin, george boateng, stelios, peter halmosi, etc.

Hull City a real force? Not really but a defining force yes! Points against the Tigers wont come easy and that could affect the standings in the long run!

But whatever be the case, Tigers have played good and quality football, not been riding their luck, so maybe with a bit of luck, they can be stay in top 10!

    Gud Luck Tigers!

well they would be a real force if they do a lot better than most teams expect. yes definitely, it will be hard to get points off hull, and i reckon they will be in the top 10 come the end of the season. i'm gonna be optimistic here and i reckon that hull could scrape an intertoto place.

Arsenal were poor yesterday - and Hull caught them out.. I remember Sheff Utd beating Arsenal and other teams when they were here and they went down..

You need consistency in this League.. and teams which come up and make bright starts might just start to fade away - other teams gather momentum only now.. Hull will do well to stay up.. that's about it.

are you sure shyam? considering the players hull have got, and considering their fantastic performances recently, i'm sure hull will do more than just stay up.

You're talking about 6 games in a 38 game season.. I think we should wait longer.

no we shouldn't. it is clear that hull are a good team and surely it's clear that they most likely won't be involved in a relegation battle. i say this with certainty when i say that there is more chance of tottenham going down than there is hull city, and no-one really expects tottenham to go down, even though they still haven't won yet.

As a Hull City fan yesterdays result was a bit of a surprise, but not the performance.
I knew we would match Arsenal pretty well, as we have done all teams this season.
But a draw seemed most likely to me before the kick off.
We will not battle against relegation this season, I think we will end up somewhere between 10th and 12th in the league come 38 games played. As others have said, we have enough quality to avoid the bottom 3 comfortably. We also have a decent amount of money remaining to be spent in the January window if needs be. Once the likes of Gardner, Fagan and Stelios are fully fit we will only get better.

Arsenal weren't poor they where prevented from playing the type of football they like to play. Hull City and their fans are only looking for a 17th place in the Prem this season so anything higher is a bonus. The only match that they have played badly was against Wigan and that was last years championship side + Geovanni when most of the Prem experienced newboys where either sidelined or injured. Yes you need consistancy in this league and apart from Wigan that is what you have had. Hull will stay up I have no doubt about that.

No comments on Hull playing 3 strikers against a "big 4" club?
Strange, but it worked. Teams with the fitness to close down their opponents for 90 minutes are hard to beat.

Let's not forget Hull were 1-0 down too, which must have really demoralised them, to pull back and actually win is incredible!

As a Hull fan i dont want to be blowing our trumpet too early into the season. 6 games in and we are standing pretty in the league. If we are in the same situation 26 games into the league i will be more confident of us being a premier league side next season.

I think playing 4-3-3 against arsenal was a big risk but prooved the right decision on the day and i have all trust in Phil Browns tactics.

Like previously pointed out our only bad result came against Wigan when the side was pretty much the same side that played alot of last season with no real premier league experience.

I think our strongest point at the moment is the defence, if we can keep a couple of clean sheets at home and make the KC a difficult place to pick up points we will be on track for a good league position (anywhere about 15th)

Last season when 'we' got promoted, managers were always making excuses for why they lost to the Tigers. It was that they didn't play well this or didn't play well that. Ultimately, we stopped them playing their style of football and made teams look bad. This season is the same. Phil Brown has a well organized squad of players that he has picked from the also rans and the nearly men on the fringes of top flight football. What Phil Brown, Brian Horton and our Chairman Paul Duffen have done is speculated on players that have a hunger to be successful. Cousin and Halmosi want to play in the Premiership, Boateng wants to prove he shouldn't have been dropped at Middlesborough. Mendy Zayette and Stelios want to play at international level again, King wants to prove that he is Premiership class after a disastrous season at Wigan plagued by injury as does Gardner after rejection by Spurs and Everton. These players added to the squad of players many from the lower reaches of the football league have a hunger to not lay down and take a beating they stand their ground and fight to win. The game on Saturday was a wonderful example of that grit and determination of the team, with everyone working together for a common goal and making a team look a lot worse than it is, by playing some very good football.

What shouldn't be forgotten about the team against Arsenal was that of the four players from last seasons Championship promotions winning side, three joined the Tigers whilst in the bottom division. Ashbee our inspirational Captain, Myhill our agile keeper and Dawson our dogged left back all plied their trade in the Coca Cola League two and have all gained promotion through all the divisions.

Not really Yoosof, but what it does do is show that a team is the sum of it's parts. Just because a team is made up of million's of pounds or dollars worth of players doesn't mean it is a team. Toure has said in an interview that 'I was scared to play against Hull City'. Is this the statement form a player that is playing for supposedly one of the best football teams in the world? Arsenal are a collection of very very good young players but are they a team? I don't think so yet, maybe loosing to Hull City will help shape them but their defense looked shaky when we attacked them and I feel that Phil Brown took his team of Tigers tot he Emirates to exploit that defense. How many other teams in Hull City's position would play 4-3-3 against he Premierships leaders? I think that is the point from this game. fortune favors the brave and Arsenal get good results because other teams go to the Emirates, Old Trafford, Anfield and Stamford Bridge with batten down the hatches attitude of damage limitation. Hull City didn't do that they went to win a game of football.

well obviously people are going to get excited when a team gets promoted, and with 7 games gone lies third in the table, due to great performances and of course a win at the emirates against arsenal! it's a bit obvious people will get excited. they will fall down the table, but i'm sure they'll stay up and to be honest i actually think they could finish mid-table, if not better. also thanks for the comment :)
