Ryan Potulny Will Have to Shed His Blackhawks Sweater for an Ottawa One
The trade deadline hits the NHL ice today. We saw just how exciting a day it can be when the deadline passed for the NBA last week. It is turning out to be a high-paced day for the NHL as well.
The latest news has Chicago Blackhawks center Ryan Potulny being traded to the Ottawa Senators for defenseman Chris Campoli. Ottawa also gets a second-round pick in the 2011 NHL early entry draft.
This is a big get for Chicago. They were in dire need of some depth along the blue line. They get that in Campoli. Parting with Potulny will not hurt the roster too much. This is a matter of Ottawa shedding salary.
They are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference and just want to get a little lighter in the pocket. Potulny was up and down with Chicago and may actually get some minutes in Ottawa.
Campoli however needed some depth for a late push for the eight spot in the Western Conference. Campoli is a solid defender with some added proficiencies on offense. The only head scratcher is why they waited so long to pull the trigger.
Chicago got exactly what they needed in Campoli.
