Trouble for Tony Romo: Don't Blame Jessica Simpson

Jonathan JorcinJan 10, 2008

The new look to the Dallas Cowboys' dominant offense is the face of Tony Romo, the 27-year-old QB out of Eastern Illinois in his first full year as a starter.

Being a quarterback for any team in the league is hard enough—but the pressure of quarterbacking America’s Team can overwhelm just about anyone.

Recent tabloid headlines have focused on Romo’s relationship with his new beautiful blonde girlfriend, Jessica Simpson. Is all the attention affecting his play?

A recent example which sticks in my mind, and the mind of every Cowboys fan, is the Eagles game, in which Romo threw three interceptions, with no touchdowns and a passer rating of 36.1.

Tony got more action from the press box then on the field, as Jessica got more air time during the telecast than the game itself.

After the fact, some fans accused Romo of not preparing for the game, and letting Simpson get to his head. Many Dallas supporters have rejoiced in the fact that Jessica won't be on hand when the Cowboys take on the Giants this weekend.

But as an avid sports fan, I say this: Let's just watch the game.

Do we need someone to blame for our own dissatisfaction and disappointment?

Athletes—even Tony Romo—have good days and bad ones. Before we pen impertinent articles and start Facebook groups blaming Jessica Simpson, let's at least get our facts straight.

On Thanksgiving, when the Cowboys were playing the New York Jets, Jessica was present and accounted for. And Romo had one of the best games of the season, going 21-28 with a 102.5 passer rating.

The next game saw the Cowboys face the Green Bay Packers. Romo went 19-30 for 309 yards, four touchdowns, and a 123.5 passer rating.

And Simpson was there.

Funny how tabloids can spin things to sell magazines.

Before you blame a girl for a jock's bad day, make sure you know the facts. Learn to love sports—and just watch the game.
