If the Montreal Canadiens were lucky enough to be free from injuries almost all season long last year, this year is already shaping up to be quite the opposite.

The Canadiens have issued word that veteran winger Alexei Kovalev has a groin injury. He will join Saku Koivu, Georges Laraque, and Roman Hamrlik and Patrice Brisebois on the sidelines. He would have completed the line of Robert Lang and Guillaume Latendresse Wednesday night, facing the Detroit Red Wings. Due to the injury, he did not leave Montreal.

Carey Price will make his first preseason start tonight, as well as other veterans like Tom Kostopoulos, Mike Komisarek, and Andrei Markov.

The absence of the veterans will give the youngsters more time on ice and a chance to prove themselves.

Updates on each injury will come in time.

My deepest thoughts and prayers go to former Edmonton Goalie Jussi Markkanen and his family, for the loss of their first-born 4-year old son. It is hard to imagine the loss of someone we love, what they are going through is beyond the bearable. May God hold their hands.
