Dubai Desert Classic, Brock Lesnar, Miami Heat and Monday's Top Sports News
Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images
Welcome to a brand new week, and a whole lot of news coming out of the sports world. Personally, the biggest event of the week is pitchers and catchers reporting. Baseball is on its way back my friends, and the cold winter seems almost worth it when you hear the best four words in the English language: spring training is here. But I digress.
The European Tour's Dubai Desert Classic wrapped up on Sunday and once again, Tiger Woods stumbled in the final round.
He shot a three-over 75 to finish the tournament at four-under, seven shots behind the winner Alvaro Quiros. Woods' round included a seven on the 18th hole par five to finish the tournament.
He continues to make baby steps forward every tournament, but he can't sustain the momentum throughout the course of an entire tournament.
In the NBA, the Miami Heat had a tough loss to the Boston Celtics on Sunday afternoon. They mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, but LeBron James missed a free throw at the end of the game to help seal an 85-82 victory for the Celtics.
It's the third victory for the Celtics in three games against Miami this year, which means that if those two teams finish with the same record going into the playoffs, Boston gets home court advantage.
Meanwhile, over in the world of MMA, Brock Lesnar is still filming the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter." He is preparing for his important showdown with Junior dos Santos this June.
Does he have the ability to stop one of the premiere heavyweights in the world?
We will have all the latest news and information from the wide world of sports on this relatively warm Monday in the midwest.

WWE Elimination Chamber Could Be The Beginning Of The Undertaker-Wade Barrett Wrestlemania Feud
The last few weeks on WWE television there have been short video vignettes signaling that something will happen on 2/21/11. For those of you keeping track, that is one week from today.
However, there is an important event taking place on 2/20/11: The Elimination Chamber. One of the main events is the Smackdown Elimination Chamber featuring Edge, Wade Barrett, Kane, Rey Mysterio, Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler.
There has been some talk that the vignettes signal the return of The Undertaker, who is supposed to start a feud with Wade Barrett going into Wrestlemania, and while that may be the case, the date of the return doesn't seem to fit.
If The Undertaker comes back on Raw, and Barrett is on Smackdown the dates don't seem to match up. So one of two things has happened: One, either the WWE production crew got their dates wrong and they meant to make the videos for 2/20/11. Two, the videos have nothing to do with The Undertaker.
As best as everyone can tell, the videos are about The Undertaker's return. However, that could be a red herring to signal the possible appearance of Sting. There have been rumors that WWE is trying to get some major players from WCW to appear at Wrestlemania, which takes place in Atlanta (where WCW headquarters were located).
So the whole 2/21/11 thing wouldn't fit with a Smackdown feud. We know that The Undertaker has told Vince McMahon he wants to fight Wade Barrett at Wrestlemania XXVII, and unless something goes wrong with his rehab that match will happen.
Expect The Undertaker's presence to be felt in some way at the Elimination Chamber to set up the match with Barrett, but don't be totally surprised if these mysterious videos turn out to be for something else entirely.

Jadeveon Clowney Announces That He Will Attend The University of South Carolina
In a move that didn't really surprise anyone, Jadeveon Clowney announced on Sportscenter this morning that he will be attending South Carolina next year.
Clowney was expected to make his announcement on National Signing Day on February 2, but chose to hold off and announce his decision today, his 18th birthday.
South Carolina was long considered the favorite for the five star defensive end since he was born and raised in the state. He narrowed his choices down to South Carolina, Clemson and Alabama. Over the course of the last two weeks it became clear that Alabama was a long shot, and that it was going to come down to South Carolina and Clemson.
Clemson would have been an interesting choice because their recruiting class was already one of the best in the nation, and adding the top player in the recruiting class would have pushed them over the top.
Instead he chose to go with the school that was the favorite this whole time. There was no drama, aside from the announcement being delayed almost two weeks.
Clowney was named South Carolina's Mr. Football in 2010 for his fantastic senior season in high school. He had 162 total tackles, 29.5 sacks, 11 forced fumbles, six fumbles recovered and five defensive touchdowns.
He will help bolster a South Carolina defense that ranked 43rd in scoring defense in 2010. They did win their first SEC East title, but were blown out by the eventual National Champion Auburn Tigers 56-17 in the SEC Championship game.

Tiger Woods Was Back For Three Rounds, But It All Came Apart On Sunday At The Dubai Desert Classic
Tiger Woods was in contention going into the final round of the Dubai Desert Classic. He was 7-under heading into the final round, just one shot behind the leader, and he was poised to make a run on Sunday.
But this is the Tiger Woods of 2011, not 2001. He doesn't have the same ability that he once did, and when he is in contention there is no guarantee that he will make a run to the top on Sunday.
Sure enough, Woods had a chance to get his first victory since 2009, but he fired a 3-over 75 on Sunday to finish seven shots behind winner Alvaro Quiros. The round started ugly with bogeys on the second- and third- holes. He was able to come back and birdie six and 11, but that was as good as things would get for him.
He would bogey 12 and 14, and then a double-bogey on the par five 18. His putting, which is the key to him being successful, let him down on Sunday. When he got into contention on Friday by shooting a 6-under 66, his putting was fantastic.
It's another sign that Woods has the ability to get back to being a championship caliber golfer, but he can't sustain it for all four rounds. As good as things were for him on Friday, things were that bad for him on Sunday.
Obviously, he is graded differently because he has set the bar so high for himself, but perhaps we should temper our expectations of him. He shouldn't go into every tournament as the favorite just because of his name. He has to prove that he is among the best players in the sport before he can command that kind of respect again.
I believe that Tiger will put everything together and win at least one tournament this year, but he has to figure out his putting stroke before that can happen.

Jadeveon Clowney Will Announce His Future College Later On Today, Who Is In The Lead For His Services?
Jadeveon Clowney, the consensus top player in the 2011 college football recruiting class, is poised to make his decision today at about 10:30 this morning. There are two teams that seem to stand out above the rest; Alabama and South Carolina.
Clowney is a defensive end from South Carolina, so he has emotional ties to the state. His family lives there, and by all accounts he is very close to them, so that could play into his decision.
Alabama has a knack for taking great high school defensive players and turning them into elite, NFL caliber talents.
Clemson is an interesting team because of the talent they have coming in. They have had a fantastic recruiting season so far (they rank eighth in the rivals.com recruiting rankings), and landing the top recruit in the nation would bump them up near the top.
Originally, Clowney was going to make his decision on National Signing Day, February 2, but he decided to postpone the announcement until today, which happens to be his birthday. A lot of people, myself included, blasted him for the delay because it looked like he was trying to make everything all about him.
However, that rage has cooled down a bit, and the decision is ready to be made.
He has been pretty quiet about where is going to play next season, but I believe that Alabama is the front runner. They have a great team in place already. He will work with a great coach in Nick Saban, who can help him hone his skills to be great in college and get him ready for the NFL.
South Carolina took some steps forward in 2010, winning their first SEC East title and competing in the SEC Championship game for the first time. They are considered the top team on his list, and it would be a huge boon to a pretty good recruiting class for Steve Spurrier.
Whatever Clowney's decision is, we will find out in a little less than an hour from now on Sportscenter.

Dana White Has Become The Preeminent Promoter In The World Today With The Job He Has Done For UFC
Dana White catches a lot of flack from MMA fans, and some sports analysts alike, because of his very brash, candid personality. For example, he was engaged in a Twitter war on Saturday night with fans of Fedor Emelianenko.
However, one thing that the haters don't look at is everything that he has done to help bring MMA into the mainstream. He does more than any promoter in the world to ensure that the fans have the best possible experience when they go to a UFC event.
For instance, the upcoming UFC 129 show from Toronto was something that White was very apprehensive about doing, according to Dave Meltzer, because he wasn't sure that they could make it so that the fans could see what was going on inside the octagon.
They are bringing in a bunch of risers to put on the floor so that fans aren't straining their neck to see what's going on. In order to do this, they had to eliminate ticket sales in the 200-level section.
White wants to make money, obviously it's a business and the goal of any business is to make money, but he is not going to take the fans money at the expense of their experience.
One person that White is frequently compared to is WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, and you can certainly see the similarities. They are both egomaniacs, but they have made a truckload of money for their respective companies.
The difference between the two men is that McMahon will do anything to take your money, even if it's at the expense of the experience of the event. There's nothing wrong with that, he has made more money in his life doing that than I could ever imagine making.
White, on the other hand, wants to make sure that since you are paying all of this money to see a UFC event that you get a great experience that makes you want to keep coming back. He takes care of the fans, who have helped turn his MMA organization into a worldwide phenomenon.
Whether you like him or not, you have to give Dana White some credit for putting the fans and their experience ahead of everything else.

Albert Pujols Wants A 10-Year Contract, But Not Even The Cardinals Are Willing To Go That Far With Him
Albert Pujols has done things his first 10 years in major league baseball that very few, if any players have ever done.
He has won three MVP awards, finished in the top 10 of MVP voting every year of his career, has hit over .300 with at least 30 home runs and 100 RBI's every year. He is underrated as a base runner, and is one of the best defensive first baseman in baseball.
He is going into the last year of his contract, and has given the Cardinals a deadline of February 16 to get a new deal done. Reportedly, he is seeking a 10-year contract, worth roughly $300 million. He is 31 years old, as far as we know (there are some questions about how old he actually is), and a 10-year deal would take him through age 41.
Given all that he has accomplished for the Cardinals in his first 10 years, shouldn't it strike him as odd that they won't go to 10 years on a new contract for him?
Which begs the question, with all that he has meant to that franchise and the city since arriving in 2001, if they won't offer 10 years on a new contract, who else will?
Pujols has an idea in his head of what his true value is, but the reality of the situation is that no one can or will go as high as he wants them to on a contract.
It's not plausible, especially given the poor economic situation that everyone is facing. Teams aren't going to give a decade long deal to a player in his 30's.
Plus, it doesn't help him that teams like the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies have first basemen locked up long term (or in the case of the Red Sox with Adrian Gonzalez, will have him locked up soon).
There are a few teams that could get involved seriously in negotiations with Pujols after the year, like the Cubs, Angels and Mets. But not one of those teams will go 10 years on a contract.
It looks like Pujols is going to be a little bit of a victim of circumstance. The teams that always spend money are locked up at first base for a long time, and with the economy still in shambles, no one is going to risk all of that money and all those years on a player who will be 32 going into 2012.
Even a player as great as Albert Pujols.

Brock Lesnar's Coaching Stint On "The Ultimate Fighter" Could Be A Blessing Or A Curse
Brock Lesnar is currently filming the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter" in Las Vegas, as everyone is well aware of. There was a lot of speculation about whether he would be a good choice to lead a bunch of young fighters since he himself is relatively new to the sport of MMA.
Lesnar's first professional fight came in June 2007. That's less than four years that he has been doing this for a living. Now, in the nearly four years that he has been an MMA fighter he has had great success. He has beaten some of the best heavyweights in the UFC, like Shane Carwin, Frank Mir and Randy Couture. He has been the UFC Heavyweight Champion, and is the biggest draw in the sport by far.
However, this coaching stint could be a blessing for Lesnar, or it could be a black cloud that hangs over him the rest of his career.
If he surrounds himself with good trainers, and is able to really help the fighters improve to the point where their potential shines through, this will be a very good thing for him. He can get rid of some of the doubters who feel like he isn't a good MMA fighter, but was pushed because of his name and he can draw money.
If he can't get through to the fighters, and really struggles with the whole set up of the show, then he will be in trouble. This show is his chance to prove that he knows the ins-and-outs of the MMA game, his opportunity to convey all of his knowledge onto the fighters and to the viewers.
Lesnar doesn't have to prove anything to us because the people that hate him are going to hate him no matter what he does. He does have a chance to win over the skeptics though.
This is a very big moment in the career of Brock Lesnar. He can prove on a big stage that he understands everything that goes into being a great fighter, not just a great athlete.
Lesnar reminds me of a raw, five-tool athlete in baseball. You can see why he should be great with all of his physical skills, but he hasn't been able to put everything together and become that great fighter.
We won't find out if he has developed as a fighter until June when he fights Junior dos Santos, but we will learn how much he understands about fighting and what it means to be great when the new season of "The Ultimate Fighter" kicks off March 30.

Miami Heat Lose To Boston Celtics For Third Time, Will They Have Better Luck In The Playoffs?
The Miami Heat haven't been the most dominant team of all time, like a lot of people expected when they signed LeBron James and Chris Bosh, but they have been one of the best teams in the NBA this season.
They are 39-15, just one-half game behind the Boston Celtics in the eastern conference. They have beaten all of the top teams in the NBA, with the notable exception of one: Boston.
Yesterday was the third time in three games that the Celtics have taken down the Heat. It was a good back and forth game, which saw the Celtics up by 13 after three quarters. The Heat held the Celtics to just 11 points in the fourth quarter and had a chance to tie the game late, but LeBron James missed a free throw and the Celtics held on to win 85-82.
If the Heat have aspirations of winning a championship this year they are going to have to defeat the Celtics to get there. They haven't looked good in the three games that they have lost to them. They are only averaging 90 points per game against them.
The Celtics were able to win this game with Paul Pierce scoring only 1 point on 0-10 shooting. Rajon Rondo led the way with a triple double, and Kevin Garnett added 19 points in the win.
The problem that the Heat run in to is that they are unable to match the depth that the Celtics have. They are able to hang in the game, but at the end the Celtics always win because they are much deeper.
That's not a problem that the Heat can fix going into the playoffs. They won't be able to add anymore talent to the roster, so they are forced to play with what they have. Granted, what they have has gotten them to the second best record in the east, but it's still not enough to take down Boston in a seven game series.
The Heat have to hope that there is some other team in the east that can stop Boston before those two teams meet in the playoffs. If the Celtics don't lose before then, James will find himself sent home once again by the team that ended his season one year ago.
