Virginia Tech has established itself at the top of the ACC from their play the last three seasons—so much so that voters and pundits, myself included, overlooked questions at QB and the offensive line, as well as the task of replacing many starters from the ACC’s best run defense a year ago.
The skeptics had all the ammo they needed after the Hokies lost their opener to little ol’ East Carolina on a blocked punt. Maybe things were finally turning against Beamer Ball?
Well, the East Carolina Pirates have turned out to be an OK team, and Virginia Tech is suddenly 3-1 with two Coastal Division wins on their mantle. I had the Hokies winning the Coastal Division and still think they will.
I go back and forth as to whether or not the Hokies will win a third ACC title in five years and may do so until they are either lifting the trophy in Tampa or eliminated from the competition. Their defense tells me "yes"—their offense tells me "no."
For Virginia Tech to win their third ACC title, they have to continue to get better at quarterback and win the turnover battle. Frank Beamer was receiving a lot of heat for his lack of offensive production after beating Furman, but those voices have quieted some with two big wins in the ACC.
Defensive coordinator Bud Foster has built his unit to a level where they have new faces, but the same results year after year. While the offense is working on some kinks, they will rely on a defense that is once again one of the best in the nation to win the Coastal Division.
