Super Bowl Commercials, Aaron Rodgers, Troy Polamalu and Sunday's Sports Stories
Gregory Shamus/Getty Images
Super Bowl commercials should be the talk of the town today amidst chips and salsa and that stranger at the Super Bowl party who won't stop talking to you because he/she had too much to drink.
So much for Super Bowl commercials surprising us with their hilarity these days; many of them have already hit the Web. What once resulted in guacamole bursting out of your mouth now will just elicit a simple, "Eh, I've seen this one before, I'm already tired of it."
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, besides having the chance to notch his first Super Bowl victory, is already being called the more "marketable" quarterback than Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger if he does indeed come away with the Lombardi Trophy tonight.
Of course, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu will try his best to make sure this doesn't happen. Rodgers could have nightmares of long, black curly hair by the time this one is done, folks.
For this and a whole lot more Super Bowl news and commentary, we have you covered throughout the day and night, fellow NFL fans.
Eminem Poses For Lipton Brisk Iced Tea in Super Bowl Ad.
Rapper Eminem made a rare appearance on a commercial during the Super Bowl adfest on Sunday, albeit in an animated form.
While his animated figure sipped Lipton iced tea, he laid out a list of demands that had to be in the ad for him to take part in it: he needs some "hot chicks," they film at his house so he doesn't have to "go anywhere," and he records his own song.
It ends predictably by him pushing a Lipton iced tea executive off a tower because they won't change the name of the drink to "Eminem."
He finishes by saying, "See?! That's why I don't do commercials."
But he did do one.
So, whether it was masked or not, Eminem did sell out in a way to the company.
It was probably all fun and games to him, but if he's really going to try to convince people that he doesn't sell out, why be in a commercial where he actually does?
Seems a bit perplexing to me.
And I don't really have a problem with celebrities or artists selling out to a Super Bowl ad. I mean, I would probably do the same thing. Hey, it's free dough.
But don't say you "don't do commercials" when you clearly do.
Vince Lombardi Trophy Captured By Packers After MVP Performance By Rodgers.
Legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, who led the Packers to their first two Super Bowls in Super Bowls I and II, once said, "Football is like life - it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority."
The Packers needed all of these qualities to win their first Super Bowl since 1997 on Sunday, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-25, in Super Bowl XLV and grabbing the Lombardi Trophy.
Leading the charge was quarterback Aaron Rodgers. In his first Super Bowl ever, Rodgers threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions against a Steelers defense that allowed 14.5 points per game during the regular season.
Rodgers also probably knew of this quote by Lombardi: "It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up."
Rodgers was sacked three times Sunday against the Steelers, and knocked down more times than that.
Yet he outperformed Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, a two-time Super Bowl winner who had many experts deeming if he won Sunday he would instantly be a lock as a Hall of Famer.
Now Rodgers is instantly thrust into the discussion of elite quarterbacks after a marvelous year that ended in a Super Bowl victory.
Vince Lombardi would be proud.
Roger Staubach Presents Lombardi Trophy to Green Bay Packers After Predicting Them to Win Super Bowl XLV.
Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach handed the Lombardi Trophy to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to present to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at Cowboys Stadium following their 31-25 Super Bowl XLV win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Staubach, considered by many to be a legendary quarterback in the NFL's history, won Super Bowl VI and Super Bowl XII with the Cowboys during his career.
But perhaps more interesting is Staubach not only predicted the Packers to win, but did so using his current expertise in real estate to do so.
Staubach is currently the Americas executive chairman at Jones Lang La Salle, a global financial and professional services firm specializing in real estate.
Staubach predicted the Packers to win Super Bowl XLV based on real estate vacancy rates.
According to Jones Lang La Salle, teams based in cities with the highest real estate vacancy rates have prevailed in the Super Bowl almost two-thirds of the time since 2000.
Perhaps everyone should have been looking at Staubach's prediction more closely before Super Bowl XLV, a Hall of Fame quarterback not only using his playing experience as a measure of the outcome but also his business expertise.

Green Bay Packers Defeat Pittsburgh Steelers In Super Bowl XLV, 31-25, For First Super Bowl Title Since 1997.
The Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-25, in Super Bowl XLV Sunday, winning the championship for the first time since 1997, when they defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI, 35-21.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Super Bowl MVP, threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns in his first Super Bowl ever, leading the Packers against a Steelers team that gave up just 14.5 points per game in the regular season.
Rodgers and the Packers also faced off against a Steelers team that was in its third Super Bowl in six years, winning in its last two appearances.
Packers receivers Jordy Nelson and Greg Jennings had big games for the Packers, with Nelson catching nine balls for 140 yards and a touchdown and Jennings catching two touchdown passes.
Rodgers won a brand new Chevy Camaro for his MVP award.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, with two Super Bowl rings to his name, passed for 263 yards, two touchdowns, and two interception in Super Bowl XLV.
Steelers receiver Mike Wallace had nine catches for 89 yards and a touchdown in the losing effort.
Packers safety Nick Collins had a huge play in the first quarter, intercepting Roethlisberger for a 37-yard touchdown to put the Packers up, 14-0.
Fox broadcaster Joe Buck had a great quote after the Packers won, saying, "The Lombardi Trophy is coming home."

Black Eyed Peas Prove That Originality and Flash Has Become More Important Than the Music.
The Black Eyed Peas proved to be one of many Super Bowl halftime shows that have flopped throughout the years Sunday at the Super Bowl halftime show, where the music itself gives way to glitz and glamor.
Sure, this is the Super Bowl, you need excitement and buzz, but it doesn't excuse artists from just shoving music down people's throats, throwing Slash-filled guitar riffs at the audience in an attempt to explode their senses to the point where they can't even think.
I was immune to this exploding of the senses, however, instead choosing to think of how truly bad the performance was.
The players on the field, heck, the viewers of the Super Bowl deserved more than that.
After Christina Aguilera's botching of The Star-Spangled Banner, I actually was fearing the Super Bowl halftime show.
I wasn't surprised by the result.
After such a great game that was just played, with the Green Bay Packers defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-25, the music probably was a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10 in comparison.
Where is the love, Black Eyed Peas?
You don't deserve any after that.

Super Bowl 2011 Score Has Packers Up in Fourth Quarter, 28-25.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers connected with receiver Greg Jennings for their second touchdown connection of the game with 11:57 remaining in Super Bowl XLV.
The Packers were leading the Pittsburgh Steelers, 28-17.
Rodgers is making a huge case to be the Super Bowl MVP if the Packers end up winning the big game.
Rodgers has passed for 240 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions in his first Super Bowl ever against a Steelers defense that allowed just 14.5 points per game in the regular season.
But receiver Jordy Nelson also has eight catches for 131 yards and a touchdown in the game, as Jennings has 33 yards and two scores.
Nelson had 45 catches for 582 yards and two touchdowns in the regular season.
Update: Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger just connected with receiver Mike Wallace for a 25-yard touchdown with 7:34 remaining in the game and the Steelers converted a two-point conversion to make it 28-25, Packers.
Wallace has nine catches for 89 yards and a TD in the game.
Wallace was a big player for the Steelers in the regular season, with over 1,200 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns. However, Wallace had 26 yards combined in two games in the playoffs.

Black Eyed Peas Prove Originality at Super Bowl XLV Halftime Show, Little Else.
There have been a lot of bad Super Bowl halftime shows throughout the years, marred by has-beens trying desperately to prove they still belong on stage and "popular" artists proving that the mainstream music today is not very impressive.
The Black Eyed Peas, in my mind, have not encompassed either one of these sad points throughout their longevity as a hip-hop band.
But they still disappointed at the Super Bowl halftime show.
I expected the Black Eyed Peas to be original this year, it's something we all have come to expect from the group.
But that didn't trump, of course, Slash from Guns N' Roses making an appearance and playing the same riff from "Sweet Child of Mine" that seemingly every group likes to sing to.
It didn't trump the fact that the Black Eyed Peas were original and nothing else, that the musical performance was more about cool costumes than the music itself.
This year I was for once excited about the halftime lineup.
Well, I guess there's always next year.
Where is the love? You aren't getting any from me this year, Will.i.am.

Super Bowl 2011 Could Be Aaron Rodgers' First Super Bowl Win and MVP.
As it stands now, the Green Bay Packers are leading the Pittsburgh Steelers, 21-17, in Super Bowl XLV as the third quarter comes to a close.
If the Packers are able to hold on, Rodgers would make a strong case for the Super Bowl MVP.
So far, Rodgers, in his first Super Bowl ever (not to mention first playoffs as a starter), has passed for two touchdowns already against the vaunted Steelers' defense, throwing no interceptions.
Packers receiver Jordy Nelson would also be a possibility, with six catches for 90 yards and a touchdown.
Rodgers winning the Super Bowl over two-time Super Bowl winner Ben Roethlisberger would instantly elevate him to elite status, not to mention if he came away with the MVP award.
Rodgers has played excellent football tonight despite some huge drops by receivers and has fared much better than many people expected facing the ferocious Steelers defense.
Rodgers had six touchdowns to zero interceptions in the Packers' first two playoff games this year, but threw two interceptions and no touchdowns against the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship Game, a game the Packers barely won, 21-14.
He seems like a completely different quarterback in Super Bowl XLV.
Salvator Guinta Recognized at Super Bowl XLV for Distinguished Award.
Salvatore Giunta, 25, received the nation's highest military honor, the Medal of Honor, in September by President Barack Obama.
On Sunday during the Super Bowl telecast, Giunta was introduced as the first living Medal of Honor recipient since the Vietnam War.
As described in a White House report:
When an insurgent force ambush split Specialist Giunta's squad into two groups, he exposed himself to enemy fire to pull a comrade back to cover. Later, while engaging the enemy and attempting to link up with the rest of his squad, Specialist Giunta noticed two insurgents carrying away a fellow soldier. He immediately engaged the enemy, killing one and wounding the other, and provided medical aid to his wounded comrade while the rest of his squad caught up and provided security . His courage and leadership while under extreme enemy fire were integral to his platoon's ability defeat an enemy ambush and recover a fellow American paratrooper from enemy hands.
Six service members had reportedly been awarded the Medal of Honor since September 2001, all posthumously, before Giunta received the award.
Giunta's actions in a life-or-death scenario demonstrate that while the Super Bowl is one of the biggest events in America every year, the game is trivial compared to the whole scope of things in life.
Giunta's actions are more important than any Super Bowl MVP's could ever be.

Charles Woodson Sustains Shoulder Injury in First Half, Doesn't Return to Field After Halftime.
Green Bay Packers star cornerback Charles Woodson is officially out of Super Bowl XLV after landing awkwardly on his shoulder on an incomplete pass by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in the second quarter.
The loss opens up an opportunity for the Steelers to come back from a 21-10 deficit in the second half. Expect Roethlisberger to particularly look for top wideout Mike Wallace following the injury to Woodson, who was covering Wallace in the first half.
Woodson had 92 tackles, five forced fumbles, and two interceptions this season and is considered one of the top corners in the game.
He's been a critical part of the Packers' run to the Super Bowl this year.
Update: The Steelers have just scored again on their first drive of the second half after Woodson went down. The drive was almost entirely done on the ground, capped off by an 8-yard touchdown run by Rashard Mendenhall. The Steelers now trail, 21-17, just minutes into the first half.
This could be a huge comeback, folks. Without Woodson, this game could completely shift. The Packers' secondary is going to be put under a lot of pressure.

Walter Payton Award Awarded To Minnesota Vikings Safety Madieu Williams.
Minnesota Vikings safety Madieu Williams was named the 2010 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year prior to Super Bowl XLV on Sunday.
The award-which highlights a player's excellence both on and off the field- had three finalists, with Williams ultimately winning the honor.
Williams originally made headlines when he made a large donation to create The Madieu Williams Center for Global Health that is affiliated with the University of Maryland.
The center was built to focus on the public health issues in Prince George's County and Sierra Leone, his birthplace.
Williams, who has already funded one school in Sierra Leone, currently is funding a second school is in the process of being built. Madieu's foundation sponsored a mission to Sierra Leone that flew American teachers, dentists and surgeons to help educate the faculty at his school, as well as giving free dental cleanings to all of the students and providing free surgeries.
Williams is also involved in the North Community YMCA, the United Way and Harvest Prep/Seed Academy.
Williams had 75 tackles this year, a forced fumble, and an interception.
He's been a big part of the Vikings' defense since joining the team in 2008, a full-time starter of a Vikings team that made it to the NFC Championship Game in 2009.

Super Bowl Score Is 21-10, Green Bay Packers, at Halftime.
The Green Bay Packers are leading the Pittsburgh Steelers, 21-10, at halftime in Super Bowl XLV.
The game has been marked by the Packers largely dominating thus far, but the Steelers scored a touchdown with 39 seconds remaining in the first half to close the gap.
Not to mention, three of the Packers' defensive backs, including top cornerback Charles Woodson, were injured in the game's first 30 minutes.
The Packers started off the scoring when quarterback Aaron Rodgers hooked up with receiver Jordy Nelson on a 29-yard touchdown with 3:44 remaining in the first quarter.
Twenty-four seconds later, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was intercepted by Packers safety Nick Collins for a 37-yard touchdown, putting the Packers up, 14-0.
After a Steelers field goal to start the second quarter, Rodgers connected on a 21-yard touchdown to top receiver Greg Jennings with 2:24 remaining in the half.
Roethlisberger responded with an 8-yard TD pass to Hines Ward to close off the half.
Roethlisberger is 13-of-21 for 143 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.
Rodgers is 11-of-16 for 137 yards and two touchdowns (no interceptions).
There have been 19 total rushes in the game, including just six by the Packers.
Nelson leads all receivers with four catches for 63 yards and a touchdown.
Christina Aguilera Draws Criticism For Botched Lyrics, Way She Sang National Anthem.
There is good publicity and there is bad publicity.
Pop singer Christina Aguilera is generally facing the latter now after not only botching the lyrics of The Star-Spangled Banner Sunday before Super Bowl XLV, but also by the way she sung it.
Her rendition of the song has inspired shots ranging from her being too "new school" to her not respecting the way the national anthem should be sung.
Some people have declared Aguilera's style an indication of every singer trying to mimic pop star Whitney Houston's performance from a while back.
Others found her pitch to be off.
Others found her tone to be off.
Others simply didn't like that she repeated herself in the anthem.
In my opinion, I think Aguilera's always had a great voice, but she does seem to change her pitch often, perhaps too much.
There's showing off your talents, and than there's flaunting them.
I also don't see how she could possibly flub the lyrics in the Super Bowl of all things.
After this, anything goes.
I'm fully expecting Will.i.am to forget his lyrics at the halftime show, or something to go horribly wrong with the stage or pyrotechnics.
Super Bowl Ads Drawing Praise, Particularly Doritos' "Pug Attack" Commercial.
As each Super Bowl commercial airs today, viewers have the option of going to Hulu.com and voting on each ad.
So far, Doritos' "Pug Attack" video appears to be the No. 1 commercial in voters' minds.
In the ad, a girl's boyfriend is seen egging on her pet pug to jump at a bag of Doritos he holds beyond a clear door.
Of course, his mission is to see the dog hit the door face first.
This doesn't go as planned, as the pug busts through the door, leaving the poor guy smashed underneath.
The 30-second ad, which is going for $3 million this year, has garnered an 100 percent approval rating so far on Hulu.
Taking second place thus far is Pepsi Max's "Love Hurts" commercial (96 percent), which ends up with an attractive girl getting knocked out by a Pepsi can.
Honestly, I didn't like either one of them.
Maybe this speaks to what us Americans like, violence in one form or another, whether it be by pug or by Pepsi cans.
Of course, that should have already been known, given that we love watching a game where giant men smash each other into oblivion.
It appears as if advertisers have done their research this year.

Super Bowl 2011 Starts With Packers QB Aaron Rodgers Connecting With Jordy Nelson.
After over 11 minutes of scoreless play in Super Bowl XLV, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers just connected with receiver Jordy Nelson for a 29-yard touchdown strike to put the Packers ahead, 7-0, with 3:44 remaining in the first quarter.
A big part of this game was seeing how Rodgers would fare against a dominant defense in the Pittsburgh Steelers. More so, how he would read the defense.
But Rodgers seems to have gotten into a rhythm, completing six passes in 10 attempts for 87 yards and a touchdown.
Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor has done a good job on Greg Jennings thus far, holding him to zero catches, but Rodgers and the Packers have managed regardless.
Update: Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has just thrown an interception to Packers safety Nick Collins, who ran it back 37 yards for a touchdown.
The Packers now lead the Steelers, 14-0, in the first quarter. This could be critical, as the Packers defense gave up only 15 points per game in the regular season.
It could prove difficult to score a lot of points on this unit tonight, led by linebacker Clay Matthews, who had 13.5 sacks in the regular season.
