So a recent (before Eric Schafer fight) interview with Houston Alexander was posted, I believe on mmajunkie.com, in which Houston Alexander was quoted as saying "my ground game is as good as anyone's."
Houston, with all due respect, you have no ground game.
If laying flat on your back, bucking your hips every once in awhile, and trying to bob and weave elbows while staying flat on your back is a ground game, then you've got it down.
Alexander is an exciting fighter, don't get me wrong. Much like Chuck Liddell, we always know what we are going to get when we watch Alexander and are constantly on the edge of our seats, not blinking, just waiting for that one big shot that shatters the opponent.
But, as we know, when their game plans do not work they are at a huge disadvantage. Schafer was able to immediately pass Alexander's guard without resistance once on the ground at UFC Fight Night Live on Wednesday. He was then able to mount Alexander, again with no resistance.
You could just see in Alexander's eyes that he had no idea what to do. I realize Schafer has excellent BJJ, but honestly it did not matter here. An amateur grappler could have passed Alexander's guard and mounted him just as easily as Schafer did.
Again, I respect Alexander for the fact that he goes in, swings for the fences, and tries to put on for the fans, but don't go making comments like this one, Houston—it just doesn't work for the hardcore MMA fans.
