Fans poured over the guardrails and onto Folsom Field in Boulder last night, celebrating Colorado's upset victory over No. 21 West Virginia.
Pat McAfee watched it all from the sideline after missing another game-changing kick. Wanna bet McAfee's phone is off today? Death threats are on their way courtesy of the same people who provided them following Pittsburgh's Backyard Brawl upset last season.
McAfee's troubles with Mountaineer fans are more upsetting than the game last night, which actually wasn't an upset. The matchup pitted ranked against unranked thanks only to faulty preseason polls.
Based on last year's results, West Virginia was placed in the top 10 in the preseason polls. Like many other teams, they quickly fell out.
Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Fresno State, South Carolina, and Michigan have all fallen out of the polls in a matter of three weeks. Teams such as Utah and East Carolina have emerged as contenders at a national level, looking to go undefeated and crash the season-ending BCS party.
The difference between the teams who have fallen out and the ones that have entered is simple: The outsies have name, prestige, and a history of being football powerhouses.
The pollsters are showing improvement from the nonsensical methods implored at the dawn of the BCS, but there is still work to be done. The biggest sign of change this season was legitimizing USC as the country's No. 1 team after week one.
Voters flip-flopped the Trojans with Georgia after a dazzling Week One performance against Virginia. The Dawgs didn't have much defense against the move, playing cupcake Georgia Southern and allowing 21 points.
The best solution for poll problems still hasn't been put into use.
I ask one thing: Why have preseason rankings to begin with? It's ridiculous to think that where Joe Bob Assistant Coach ranks his team has an effect on who could get a chance to compete for the BCS National Championship at season's end, but it's true.
If Missouri and USC go undefeated this season (likely), a Big Ten champ in Wisconsin or potential Big East champ South Florida would be shut out from the big game. But why? Thank Mr. Ass. Coach, who decided that Missouri and USC were better than Wisconsin and USF before a snap was recorded.
The system is wrong, and it's time to make it right.
