Nick Diaz and Paul Daley Exchange Barbs Leading Up to Possible Strikeforce Fight
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker recently stated that Paul Daley would be next in line for a shot at Nick Diaz's Strikeforce welterweight title if Daley wins an upcoming fight for the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts.
Speaking during the media conference call prior to the Nick Diaz versus Evangelista Santos bout that took place on Saturday, Jan. 29, Coker said, "If he [Daley] loses, the deck’s gonna get reshuffled, and if he wins, then he’ll be the first in line to get the title shot."
Diaz dispatched Santos via armbar submission in the second round of their bout, retaining his welterweight title. After the fight, Daly's name came up during the post-fight press conference. Diaz said, "I'm not really impressed with Paul Daley as a mixed martial artist. I'm sure he knows what's going to happen if he steps in there to fight me. All [fighters] can really do is try to down-talk me and minimize what I've done in the past and what I might do to them."
“I see me putting punches on him, and maybe him taking me down, too, and getting caught in a choke," Diaz continued. "He could run from me, and I could run him down, take him down, and beat him on the ground. I don't know. I could see that fight going a lot of different ways,”
When Daley was asked about Diaz's comments on the MMA Hour radio program, he responded, "Nick doesn't have great wrestling," Daley said. "Most of his takedowns come from the clinch or he's dropping guys with bodyshots, but that ain't gonna happen with me. Yeah, he's fast but he's not explosive like me when it comes to MMA. He's got great conditioning, yeah, but what happens when I'm moving three or four times as fast as anybody he's fought in the past? How's he going to deal with that?"
Daley seemed to have the same opinion of Diaz that the champ has of Daley. "I thought Diaz was OK," Daley said, discussing his victory over Santos. "I thought he's been more impressive in other fights. And I thought Cyborg was predictable. I kind of thought after the first round he'd be done because of wind. The guy used to fight at heavyweight, so it's not going to be easy on his body to go to welterweight. Diaz, the guy fights from everywhere, uses punches and kicks. Then it went to the ground. It wasn't really impressive because I expected him to beat Cyborg. It was an OK performance."
If Daley does get a shot at Diaz, his prediction of the outcome: "I will knock Diaz out. I will knock him out."
