MLB Rumors: Could Eric Chavez Be Headed to South Beach?
MLB Rumors: Eric Chavez has played his entire professional career with the Oakland Athletics, but multiple injuries over the last few seasons made him expendable, and they allowed him to walk out the door this offseason.
There has been sporadic interest in the six-time Gold Glove award winner in recent weeks, coming from places like Los Angeles and Toronto, but the latest rumors place him in the crosshairs of the Florida Marlins.
According to the Palm Beach Post, the Fish are considering him as a backup option and insurance policy in case third baseman in waiting Matt Dominguez, who is just 21 years old and still hasn't played above Double-A ball, isn't quite ready to step into a Major League role just yet.
Despite Chavez's long injury history, and frequent back issues, he seems like one of baseball's good guys, and I'd like to see him get one more chance to re-start his career. And if he somehow manages to stay on the field, he'll be a hit with South Florida's large Latin population.
Here's some more Marlins news as we head towards Spring Training.
