Who's Fault Is It, Anyway?
I grew up the son of a referee/umpire. He always taught me that you never want to let the game come down to a bad call or a fluke play. Do your best to keep it out of the hands of others. Because referees, umpires, judges, etc. are human and they do screw up.
I'm not saying Ed Hochuli shouldn't be castigated for what happened at the Chargers-Broncos game. He blew two easy calls. Completely blew them. But is it his fault that Jay Cutler single-handedly earned a Pro Bowl berth throwing on a supposedly good defense? Or that, for whatever reason, the Chargers decided not to drop more men into coverage since the Broncos running gameplan was three-clowns-and-a-cloud-of-dust?
Or that San Diego has a new excuse to chalk up to losing another game, despite the fact that they've probably been the most talented team in the NFL since 2004 and have two playoff wins to show for it?
All Ed Hochuli's fault. I mean, I'm sure he told the Chargers guys to blow coverage on Eddie Royal on consecutive plays. And we're apparently all okay with forgetting that Norv Turner is a terrible coach? Because the guy that tells me these things must have called in sick that day.
Again, Hochuil deserves plenty of angst. And I could be joining in if he bones over my Ravens this weekend. But can we have some perspective here?
Hochuli may have cost the Chargers the game but they're the ones who ultimately lost it. Can we please just let this freaking story go? Pretty please?
