The Weekend in Sports: Clemens and NFL Playoffs

Two things dominated sports news this weekend: the NFL Wild Card playoffs and Roger Clemens' appearance on 60 Minutes.

Clemens was on the show defending himself for the accusations in the Mitchell Report. If you have been in a cave for the past two months, former trainer Brian McNamee stated in the Report that he injected both New York Yankees star pitchers Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens with steroids and HGH.

A couple of days after the Mitchell Report came out, Pettitte admitted to taking HGH on two occasions. Clemens, however, has set out to repeatedly deny and defend himself against the accusations.

Clemens made an appearance on 60 Minutes last night in efforts to defend both himself and his reputation. He has also been invited to appear before another congressional hearing on the use of steroids in baseball. Many have said that Clemens will bury himself at the hearing because he is lying. Trainer Brian McNamee has also been invited to appear at the congressional hearing.

It has been rumored that Clemens would not appear at the hearings. It was reported this morning that Clemens has filed a lawsuit against McNamee for defamation of character. Now many so-called experts will be saying that he filled the lawsuit so he doesn't have to say anything at the hearings. Don't be surprised now if McNamee files a counter-suit in defense of himself.

This is definitely a case of he said-he said and who knows how it will turn out. You can be guaranteed that the talking head stat geeks will be against Clemens being voted into the Hall of Fame.

The weekend also brought us some pretty good football with the Wild Card round of the playoffs. I have said many times this season that I thought the NFL had gotten boring when compared to college football, but this weekend's matchups were pretty good. Heck I even picked a couple of the games right!

I did however want the Redskins to beat Seattle just because I get so tired of people saying that the game has passed by Joe Gibbs and Sean Taylor.

Many will say that Eli came through against the Bucs, but in reality he just didn't make any mistakes. No, I am not one of the many talking heads bashing Eli, in fact just the opposite. I would like to see Eli win the Super Bowl just to shut the Mike Lupica's of the world up.

Another thing about the talking heads—just a couple of seasons ago they were all saying Chargers QB Phillip Rivers was going to be great. He was unbelievable and the Chargers should have traded Drew Breese and started Rivers. Now they all say that he is erratic and unreliable. Well he looked pretty reliable to me yesterday as the running stunk and he managed San Diego to a come-from-behind win over the Titans.

The Titans are another story. If they had any offense at all to go with that defense—or if Vince Young could pass—they would dominate the AFC. I am not sure if it is Young's lack of true quarterback skills—yes he can run and is tough—or lack of talent at wide receiver, but the Titans need to work hard on offense this offseason.

Did anyone hear the story of Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren's wife Kathy? No, not the one that she can't stay and watch the games because she gets too stressed, but the one about how she tells Coach Holmgren he can coach if he has his health. Well it looks to me like he really needs to get on a diet. Oh well, I have to pick on someone this week.

I got emails again about why we don't cover a lot of basketball here at The Blitz. For once I will answer: We don't do a lot of basketball coverage because basketball, especially the NBA, is BORING.

The season is long, the games are long with way too many time outs, the players are boring spoiled babies, and nothing really matters during the regular season because half of the league makes the playoffs. The only good, even half interesting thing about regular season basketball is Marc Cuban, Isaiah Thomas, and whichever spoiled player is in trouble now.

So please no more crying about regular season basketball.

We got a couple of other emails asking why we did not break down the Wild Card playoffs...Because everyone else was! You can get all of the breakdowns at other places and we don't mind if you go there. We are here for fun, entertainment (hopefully), and enjoyment. That is what The Sports Blitz is about, but guess what? We are going to break down this coming weekend's division round.

Don't forget to vote on this week's Fan Poll.
