One of WWE's biggest pay-per-views of the year, Royal Rumble, just finished and the road to WrestleMania has begun in style. Royal Rumble, with its unpredictability and surprises, rarely fails to deliver. Royal Rumble 2011 did not prove to be an exception as it delivered some good spectacle.
I would skip the analysis of World Heavyweight Championship and WWE championship. My focus is on the apex Battle Royale, the 40 men Royal Rumble, where Alberto Del Rio stood tall as the sole survivor and as the winner of Royal Rumble 2011.
Heading into the match, we all had our choices and expectations. Right from John Cena and CM Punk to John Morrison, there were many contenders. In annual lot of "Rumble Surprises," we were treated to the return of the Booker T and Kevin Nash (Diesel).
However, many predictions had to bite the dust as Punk and Morrison were out pretty earlier than we expected. Hornswogglle once again lasted longer than our wishes. Cena once again thrashed Nexus, old or new does not really matter. There were some nice performances from John Cena, Bryan, Punk, Husky Harris (yeah, surprising), Kingston and Morrison (for all the seconds he lasted).
The Man of the Moment, Alberto Del Rio was everywhere for the last few weeks. He interrupted everybody, from R-Truth to HBK to assert that winning the Rumble is his destiny. We honestly thought that he cannot go on to win the Royal Rumble. But gosh, we were wrong. Del Rio, to our pure astonishment, is going to headline WrestleMania.
It is now time to shrug off any feeling that we may have about his win and ponder over on what lies in the future of Alberto Del Rio. In my humble opinion, he has only two possibilities headlining into WrestleMania.
In the first case, he will be facing Edge. Edge is almost certain to hold onto his title going into Atlanta. This match seems to be a nice choice. Both these men are awesome athletes and can deliver one awesome match.
In the second, and less unlikely scenario, Alberto Del Rio could actually face the Raw champion after Elimination Chamber. However, looking at how the events have shaped out, this is unlikely. Peeps, which are eager to see Christian vs. Del Rio, guys sorry but this is not going to happen.
Now the bigger question remains, whether Alberto Del Rio was the right choice for this honour. I am skeptical.
Well, everything shows that he is ready to main event the WrestleMania. He has got the look, charisma, mic skills and wrestling skills. However, storyline potential is really not that great when we look at it.
There is no suspense as to whom he might face. One thing is for sure, the creative team will have to work on one heck of a build up for this man leading up to WrestleMania.
I think this is all that we can actually discuss about the man himself right now. Let us just briefly look at the event overall.
Looking back the event, we have seen progression of both the main rivalries on Raw, as Randy Orton and Cena have mixed up their foes. Randy Orton vs. Punk and Miz vs. Cena appear to be the main events for WrestleMania from Raw.
So, we can settle down now and be comfortable in our couches. We have a lot of time and possibilities for WrestleMania to chew over. Let me know your opinions and analysis of the Royal Rumble 2011, was it a Hit or a Miss?
