Boston Red Sox Prospects Report: Utility Infield

JB McCandlesCorrespondent ISeptember 18, 2008

Alex Cora is the ideal utility infield bench player, but his contract is up at the end of the year and the Red Sox will most likely not bring him back. The Red Sox look as if they are interested in Willie Bloomquist, but they could also make a move within their farm system.

Oscar Tejada, Position: 5 & 6, Age 18

Tejada is an exceptional athlete. He is certainly ahead of the game. He is only 18 and finished up the season playing with single A intermediate Greenville. He has potential to hit for power, but for now he has hit for contact. Needs improvement with plate discipline. He has good speed, but he needs to improve his intelligence on the base paths. He has good range, but needs to work on his throws. He will probably end up around the lines of a Brandon Phillips.

Derrik Gibson, Position: 6, Age 18

Gibson is an elite defensive catcher with a strong and accurate arm. He has great contact with the bat and is a double hitter. He is very gritty like Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedrioa. He has very good speed and makes intelligent plays on the base paths.
