Tim Sylvia: Size over Skill?

Tim Sylvia may be huge, but does he have the skills to back it up? Chris Bean doesn't think so.

Anyone who has ever seen Tim Sylvia fight knows how BIG he is! At 31, the man is 6'8" so I would guess he is probably one of the BIGGEST guys in the UFC today.

Now, I'm not trying to say that the guy doesn't have any talent, because he is skilled in boxing and Muay Thai, but I think he's one of those fighters who can just bully anyone around due to his sheer size.

I'm not saying that I would want to go up against him, but what when it comes down to it, is he as skilled as he is big? I honestly don't believe so—he has skill, but I think that his size plays the largest role in his victories. Some people probably disagree with me, and I'm not writing this to bash on Tim Sylvia, I'm just asking the question.

Tim Sylvia was SIX INCHES TALLER then Randy Couture when they fought. SIX INCHES! And yet, Couture who was 35 pounds lighter and 13 years OLDER than Sylvia obliterated him with a low left kick and a big right hand. He then went on to receive the win by unanimous decision! That might show Sylvia probably isn't as skilled as he ought to be.

He's probably thinking that because he's so big he doesn't need to be as skilled as he ought to be. Being big is not going to work against all opponents, as his fight with Randy Couture showed.

I want to end this article by saying that if you haven't figured it out yet, I'm not a Tim Sylvia fan, but I do respect him...

  1. I am not a fan of Tim Sylvia's either, and was just thinking tonight as I watched "Justice" on American Gladiator last night, that I wish Justice was an MMA fighter and could get into the octagon with Tim. Of course at 290 # he would have to drop a little weight, but boy does he look like he could handle Sylvia on equal footing! I, at least, would love to see it. I was so disgusted, not surprised however, to see Tim lying on vera and not trading punches to any extent. He just strikes me as being a bully who would rather let his weight speak for his presence in the ring than take a chance on really fighting. If God or Joe Silva hears my prayers. maybe Chek Kongo will fight Tim and throw him around and keep him from pinning him up against the fence. Now that would be "justice".
