The Flyers named Mike Richards their 17th captain today in a move that the Flyers needed to get done before training camp this Sat. GM Paul Holmgren has also named Winger Simon Gagne and Defensmen Kimmo Timonen the alternate captains. At first Richards was called Captain Canada is now the new captain of the Philadelphia Flyers. Richards who has been the constant name that was brought up in the consideration of the captaincy obviously received enough praise from teammates and coaching staff.

This is the ultimate honor in the sport of hockey and especially for a young superstar like Richards. People in Philadelphia and in the world of hockey has so often looked at Richards as a Bobby Clarke like player. If that is the case, then we got a captain for the next 10 years and a hall of famer waiting to be enshrined. We can forget about all that for right now and lets begin focus on the 2008-09 season where the Flyers now have their leader and all that is left is the attack on Lord Stanley and his Cup.
