Jack LaLanne, health expert who was referred to as "the godfather of fitness," died at his home in Morro Bay, California, at the age of 96. He had recently suffered from a bout of pneumonia, which led to his death.
In 1951, LaLanne began to host The Jack LaLanne Show, which he continued to do until 1985. The show brought the world of fitness into the comfort of people's homes.
He was also known for feats of strength and endurance as he got older. Perhaps most notable was what he did at 60. According to U.S. News:
"At age 60, he swam 1.23 miles from San Francisco's Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf while handcuffed, with his legs shackled, and towing a 1,000-pound boat."
He was a legend even beyond the world of fitness, and he will be missed.
