Football: A Song Worth Singing

Michelle AlvesSenior Writer ISeptember 15, 2008

Football has taken over my life. Every minute, every second of the day, it’s all I think about. If I’m reading the newspaper, I turn to the sports section first. If I switch on the television, its mainly for ESPN.  It’s gotten to a point where I can turn on the radio, listen to a song, and relate it to football.

How? This may seem totally crazy and rude, but some players or teams just relate to certain songs.

Manchester United

One Monday night I was ready for change. Instead of the usual football or cricket, I decided I was going to watch cartoons. I flipped to the channel and a classic, Adams Family, was just about to start. I sang along with the theme and added a little more flavour to it:

They're creepy and they're kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They're all together ooky

Fergie’s family

How cool, I remember thinking, and wondering what other songs I could relate to players.

Peter Crouch

Mr. Tall and Lanky. Liverpool's former player, and one of my favourites. You’d think it was hard, finding a song that reminds me of Crouch, but it came quite easily. I have this strange liking for nursery rhymes and kid’s songs. Not because it makes me cool or anything, mainly because it annoys the hell out of my friends when I sing them.

You might have heard of this one:

My Daddy Long Legs,
You've made my life worthwhile;
My Daddy Long Legs,
You've taught me how to smile.

With his hilarious robot dance and funny way of scoring goals, Daddy long legs has always managed to put a smile to my face

Cristiano Ronaldo

Now, everyone who knows me, will be able to tell you about my intense dislike for Cristiano, and immense love for The Killers.

So it was only obvious that the lyrics:

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend

Could only make me think of one person.

Carlos Tevez

Maybe I’m not such a big fan of Ugly Betty, but I do know what it is and well there is—yeah there SO is—a resemblance between Ugly Betty and Tevez.

So for that “Hey Betty, you are beautiful” the re-make of Mika's “Big Girl” really suits Mr. Tevez.

Wayne Rooney

I came across this song a few days ago when i was going through my music folder on the computer. I have no idea how it got there, but it sounded pretty cool.

This is how the song goes:

Jump around
Fat boy you're big and round
Uptown, downtown, around the town
All the girls, they don't want a little man now
In London they want a big boy now”

Dear Mr. Rooney,

If you by chance happen to read this, I’m really really sorry. I love you and think you are the best. And if you believe what I’m saying right now you’re dumber than you look.

I could relate a million more songs to players or teams, but I think I’ve written enough. It would be interesting to learn how other crazy people like me compare songs to players *hint* *hint*.
