Open Letter to Liverpool Fans: Remembering the 2001 UEFA Cup Final

Nohome JeromeCorrespondent IJanuary 18, 2011

Dear Liverpool fans,

I'm writing to you from Vitoria-Gasteiz, home of Deportivo Alavés.

Next May will be the 10th anniversary of that epic UEFA Cup Final between Liverpool FC and Deportivo Alavés.

To Liverpool FC, this title means a comeback to the top of the European scene, a place Liverpool History demand and deserve. For Deportivo Alavés, this is also a special memory. It is not only the furthest the team has ever reached, but also the biggest moment for the city and its fans.

Nowadays, our team battles in the Second Division, hoping to promote as soon as possible.

Ten years later, we consider this is a perfect moment to make some kind of tribute to Deportivo Alavés and, naturally, to Liverpool FC as well. That's why a couple of journalists (me and a partner of mine), decided to start writing a book of Alaves´ 2000-01 season. Now that the book is about to be finished, we have started the promotion of it by creating a Facebook site (in Spanish).

This site is not just a place to advertise the book. We are looking forward to becoming some kind of museum of that season, especially the unforgettable 2001 UEFA Cup Final.

We would like to collect in that site many pictures, videos, stories or people who joined Alavés and Liverpool FC to Dortmund.

I was 13 in 2001 and my father took me to Dortmund. Honestly, we were a little bit concerned of Liverpool FC fans. The reality was completely wonderful. I can truly affirm that Liverpool FC fans are the best in Europe.

The awesome atmosphere of fraternity, friendship and sportsmanship was unbelievable. Just amazing. That's why we want to invite all of you, Liverpool FC fans on the Internet to join the Alavés fans on Facebook on this site.

Fans of both teams led by example almost 10 years ago. We think that is the perfect time to rejoin our paths and remember that wonderful final.

Liverpool FC fans, thanks for the memories.
