Game Recap

September 14, 2008

On the night of the 13th of September 2008, Chivas and Pachuca faced each other as part of their decades old rivalry, in Pachuca.

What happened was a disappointment, since Pachuca defeated Chivas of Guadalajara and the way both teams played left much to be desired.

Pachuca attempted to play an organized game while Chivas was attempting to regain lost ground without any success. Chivas made errors in its game plan, such as an own goal accompanied by a lack of organization and teamwork during the game.

In spite of the two goals by Chivas, Pachuca was able to score five goals by taking advantage of the errors of their opponents. Regardless, every goal by Pachuca was like a stake or a dagger placed in the heart of this Chivas fan. The same applies whenever Chivas USA loses.

It does not help manager Efrain Flores, who is already under scrutiny for his coaching skills. Every time a team loses, there is a need for a scapegoat and it appears that Flores has become the target of everything that is going wrong in Chivas of Guadalajara.

Flores felt the heat in this game and it did not help that Jorge Vergara (owner of Chivas of Guadalajara) was sitting next to the possible successor Ronald Koeman (who is a native of Holland). It appears that Jorge Vergara is making plans for a gradual phasing out of Efrain Flores.

Jorge Vergara should not play musical chairs during La Liga seasons. The game of musical chairs is not conducive to the team’s performance during the season. Vergara should either replace Flores with Koeman, or just accept Flores and try to work on improving the team. Again, this is a decision that must be taken by Jorge Vergara.

Chivas of Guadalajara was not the only Chivas team to suffer defeat. C.D. Chivas USA suffered a humiliating defeat in its game against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on the 11th of September 2008.

Twellman, Ralston, Smith, and Larentowicz were able to place another dagger in the heart of this Chivas Fan with their goals during the second half of the game. Again, the New England Revolution was able to take advantage of the errors of Chivas USA in this important game.

Chivas USA is currently in third place in the Western Standards of the MLS with 26 points while New England is in second place in the Eastern Standings of the MLS with 18 points.

While I am disappointed at the results, I refuse to turn my back on Chivas. I support Chivas of Guadalajara and Chivas USA in the good times and bad. I feel that Chivas of Guadalajara will find a way to recover and win future games in the ongoing Mexican football season.

Chivas is a team that does not give up easily, and has shown itself to be strong in its century of existence. Long live Chivas of Guadalajara and Chivas USA. Chivas of Guadalajara is still the champion of the Mexican League in my heart, while Chivas USA is the champion of the MLS in my heart and soul.

    Good article Roberto.

I watched New England thump Chivas on Thursday. I was surprised because Chivas actually looked pretty decent in the first half.

Ronald Koeman, eh? I'm a little surprised to hear his name connected to a club in the Western Hemisphere, but they'd be getting a qualified manager.
