2011 NFL Mock Draft: Where Will Cam Newton Go?

When we last saw Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, he was putting the finishing touches on a fantastic season by winning the BCS National Championship Game against the Oregon Ducks.

The next time you will see him will be at the 2011 NFL Draft, as the Heisman Trophy winner announced today that he will indeed forgo his final season at Auburn to enter the draft.

Well then, now that we know that for sure, we may as well speculate as to where he might go.

If Newton had played brilliantly in the BCS Championship, we might be talking about him going No. 1 overall to the Carolina Panthers. But he was just okay, so that's probably a long shot.

Instead, it's far more likely he'll go to one of the early or mid-round teams that needs a new quarterback.

First among these teams would be the Arizona Cardinals with the No. 5 pick. It's a possibility, but you get the sense that they would be taking Newton too early at that point, especially given the fact that they might be able to get somebody like LSU's Patrick Peterson or maybe even Newton's teammate, Nick Fairley.

The San Francisco 49ers are a possibility at No. 7, but it seems more likely that they will get a veteran quarterback and use the draft to bolster their defense.

Personally, I have Newton going at No. 8 to the Tennessee Titans in my draft. After all, what better way to replace Vince Young with a player with very similar skills?

That being said, I realize it's a questionable notion, as Jeff Fisher might not be willing to take on another VY.

Outside the Top 10, the best fits are the Vikings at No. 12 and the Dolphins at No. 15. Either of them could bite if Newton slips to them.

For now, suffice it to say that it's way too early to tell.
