AOL FanHouse: Sporting News Takeover Could Mean Major Cuts
AOL FanHouse is going to become a property of the Sporting News, which will take control of its editorial content.
According to the New York Times, the Sporting News takeover will mean some pretty significant changes for FanHouse, which had nearly 10 million unique visitors in December.
Jeff Price, president and publisher of Sporting News, said that the company is trying to broaden its national profile, and will retain some of FanHouse's premiere columnists, such as Kevin Blackistone, Lisa Olson and Terence Moore.
But there will be cuts. Tim Armstrong, chairman and chief executive of AOL, said that he expects somewhere between two dozen and 40 FanHouse employees to be laid off.
In addition, a tweet from SportsbyBrooks.com's Twitter account stated that "all of the roughly 70 fulltime freelance positions at AOL Fanhouse will be cut."
“This is a way for us to do it in a more profitable way and to do more coverage in the future,” said Armstrong. “You can see this as a combination of two brands that are keeping their focus.”
This news is obviously just coming out, and it's far too early to know for sure what's going to happen. If there are any further developments, we will let you know.
