Brent Musberger proved to be the soothsayer tonight.
"The only problem for Oregon is that they've given Cam Newton two-and-a-half minutes in which to score", he said after Oregon wide receiver Jeff Maehl caught a no-look pass from Derron Thomas to tie an absorbing National Championship Game at 19.
He was right. Newton—as he'd been doing all season and for three quarters of this game (the first quarter he didn't do all that much—then again, nor did both offenses)—burned the Oregon Ducks and set up Wes Byrum for the winning, last-minute field goal that sent the toilet paper flowing at Toomer's Corner and created an orange and blue celebration that no-one could take away from the Tigers.
If we're honest, no-one could have taken away a win from the Oregon Ducks—if it had gone that way too. The Ducks played their part in a game that while lower than the Vegas over/under of 70.5 (we were thinking more than 90, if we're honest!), was as exciting as the shoot-outs that both sides are accustomed to showing.
But there you go—the Auburn Tigers are National Champions, and we can't wait for September.
