Week 3 Predictions For The ACC

Justin CocchiolaCorrespondent ISeptember 11, 2008

The ACC is trying to rebound in week three from a poor start this season.  Here are the upcoming games, and my predictions for this week.

UNC 34 Rutgers 24

TJ Yates will have to carry the Tar heels in this one, and build on his previous game against McNeese St.  Expect Greg Little, now running back for the Tar heels, to have a breakout performance.  Mike Teel threw two picks in his first game against Fresno State, and an inexperienced offensive line won’t do Rutgers any favors in this one.  North Carolina looked less than impressive in their first game, but hopefully rebounds to beat Rutgers in the battle for the worst conference in college football.

Peter Lalich has legal troubles and will be out of this one, but it doesn't matter if he's there or not.  Virginia struggled against Richmond, and they will struggle to score here against an experienced UCONN team.  No chance for UVA.

Clemson 42 NC State 10

If this game is any kind of close, Clemson should fire Tommy Bowden.  The Wolfpack are a bad football team, with a good defensive line; however, it will not matter in this one.  Cullen Harper should throw for at least three touchdowns, and the game may be canceled due to “Thunder and Lightning.”

California 35 Maryland 7

Maryland has been pretty pathetic this season, winning by seven in their opener to Delaware, and then losing to Middle Tennessee State last week.  Chris Turner will be facing a better California defense, so look for him to throw at least another three interceptions.  The only chance Maryland has to win is if Cal can’t stop Da’Rel Scott, who has been one of the lone bright spots for Maryland so far this year.  Look for Kevin Riley and Jahvid Best, who had 200 yards on 14 carries last week, to dominate the Maryland defense.

Navy 45 Duke 42 F/OT

Duke is a better team than they were last year, and they will be able to play a lot of competitive games this season.  They could win this game, but I think Shun White and that Navy offense will be too much for them to handle.  If they do win it’s because Thaddeus Lewis has a monster day, which he probably will regardless.

Florida State 56 Chattanooga 0

Florida State won’t lose, but they may not win this big if they’re worried about Wake Forest next week.

Virginia Tech 13 Georgia Tech 10

This game is going to be a hard fought battle on defense and special teams.  Whichever team wins in these two categories should win the game.  Paul Johnson has installed the new offense, and it’s taking a while for it to mesh.  Georgia Tech had only 235 yards against Boston College’s defense last week, and most of that came on the ground.  If the Virginia Tech defense has finally learned how to tackle, Georgia Tech will have a hard time scoring the ball offensively.  The demise of Virginia Tech will be the offense.  Can they overcome the best defensive line in the ACC?  Doubtful.  Hokies win because of their special teams.

There you have it, my bold predictions and analysis on the ACC’s upcoming games.  Looks like it may be another bad week for the ACC.
