Randy Edsall named new Maryland Head Coach

Yesterday, the Terps finally announced their new head coach, former UConn head coach Randy Edsall. Two weeks of speculation finally came to a close with a short 2 hour interview, and a meeting with current players. The Terps have the man Kevin Anderson promised would “excite the fan base” and take the Terps from “good to great.” So it seems, and Coach Edsall’s first order of business, other than recruiting and assembling a staff, will be to win over a fan base who have cried out against his hiring. Names such as Mike Leach and Gus Malzahn had our imaginations running wild with the expectations of not only scoring 30 to 40 points per game, but winning multiple ACC championships, and dare I say it, competing for National Championships too.

Kevin Anderson’s first coaching hire could very well decide his future at the University. While “experts” such as Heather Dinich at ESPN claim this was a “safe hire,” I disagree. When Edsall’s name was first rumored a couple of weeks ago fans immediately spoke out against such a move. Edsall’s poor recruiting record, vanilla offense, and what many find boring personality were not favorable traits fans wanted from the new coach. Maryland forums have sounded off since yesterdays first rumor, and many are threatening to cancel season tickets, Terrapin Club and Maryland Gridiron Network memberships. If Anderson is wrong about Edsall, they will both be packing their bags in the very near future.

Negative Note:
Edsall is a coach that believes a team requires a family atmosphere to have success. He’s big on accountability. When players decide they will forgo their remaining eligibility, Edsall demands that they announce the decision in front of the entire team. Face-to-face, respectful, accountable, and like a man. The football team at UConn found out their coach was leaving while on the tarmac after their flight from Arizona. Edsall wasn’t on that flight, and he told the team by phone.

Positive Note:
Unlike the basketball coach at UConn, Edsall is squeaky clean and plays by the rules. His players go to class, and they graduate. UConn has one of the highest Graduation Success Ratings in the Big East, and Edsall is a big reason behind that. Also, and much like fan favorite Mike Leach, he wins with mostly 2 and 3 star talent. He took a team transitioning from D1-AA to D1-A, and got them to 5 bowl games in 7 years. While growing up in Glen Rock, PA he claims to have been a big Terps fan.
