Call it a Rose Bowl Rumble.

Just minutes after ABC's broadcast of Tuesday's Illinois-USC game, Kirk Herbstreit and Brent Musburger had to be separated by stadium security during a brief but violent skirmish.

Apparently, the dispute centered around who had a bigger man-crush on USC head coach Pete Carroll.

Musburger, the senior member of the broadcast duo, spent most of the four-hour telecast gushing over Carroll's forays into Southern California ghettos in search of new running backs.  Herbstreit matched his play-by-play man with a compliment-to-commercial ratio that made Carroll blush during his postgame press conference.

At one point during the game, Musberger observed, "Carroll could probably start 11 song girls and still find a way to beat the Illini."

Herbstreit countered, "Heck Brent, look at him.  He's hot enough to be a song girl!"

Sources close to Bleacher Report tell us the scuffle broke out as both broadcasters rushed to the elevator in an effort to intercept Carroll in the parking lot.

ABC sideline reporter Lisa Salters, who interviewed the USC head coach following a 49-17 win, confirmed that both Herbstreit and Musburger offered to trade assignments with her before the broadcast.

ABC declined comment for this story.

  1. And it was all right here, on she-bee-esh!

    1. Lou Holtz, don't you mean ayy-bee-shee?

    2. Now I'm giggling...they BOTH have funny speech impediments!

  2. Yeah those two were overly forward towards Petey, but it Illinois didn't help by laying a complete egg in the Rose bowl.

  3. I wonder who would win that fight...

  4. I bet Musburger wins. He's been in this job way too long. He must fight dirty or something.

  5. This just in. I
In an attempt to one up Brent, Kirk has now offered to personally chauffeur Pete around the ghettos as he looks for the next Reggie Bush.

Never one to go down without a fight, Brent has countered by saying he would put up the down payment for the house of the next Reggie Bush.

  6. Reggie Bush is a scrub, most overrated RB in history.

  7. How a guy like Brent Musberger, and his clone Bryant Gumbel still are employed by their respective networks, is one of the biggest mysteries of the modern age.

They must have some dirt on the execs they work for.

  8. you must be a ucla fan dush bag

  9. Hothead he is...saw Kirk on Bouron Street last night ... wearing a white and blue shirt. Some fan said "nice colors" Kirk and Kirk lunged at him "I'll kick your ass"

  10. Typical SC fan, doesn't even know how to spell "douche"! Makes sense, since very few SC fans actually attended USC, or college for that matter.

  11. Congrats to UCS for winning the Rose Bowl again. I can't wait to see your big matchups next season. Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Stanford really will be noteworthy wins next year.

  12. ever been to a pac 10 game. it's really like a big high school football game. i swear this is true,

when the number 1 team in the country is playing and 2 hours before game time you can walk up to the ticket office and buy a ticket at face value, like i did at usc-aizona, you know you aren't in athens or tuscaloosa for an SEC matchup. an you believe that was possible?
