Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo hosted the NHL Winter Classic Tuesday, with the Pittsburgh Penguins facing the Buffalo Sabres on a natural outdoor ice rink.

The weather didn't cooperate, as it snowed heavily for the most of the game. The Penguins wore light blue throwbacks jersey dating to their very first NHL season.

Because of the quantity of snow on the ice, the game didn't produce electrifying play. Many players had puck control problems, and many passes were errant.

To his credit, Sidney Crosby did manage to show some nice moves to the fans early on. After the opening face-off, Crosby took the puck towards Buffalo's net before finding an open Colby Armstrong for a goal only seconds into the game.

Buffalo managed to tie up the score early in the second period on a Brian Campbell goal, but the game lost its tempo after that. Play was stopped on a number of occasions to repair the ice, further slowing the action.

The score was still 1-1 after an overtime period, necessitating a shootout. Crosby ultimately notched the game-winner by sending the puck through Ryan Miller's legs.

Final score: Pittsburgh Penguins 2, Buffalo Sabres 1

It was an interesting game to watch and the Crosby shootout goal was memorable. However, the excitement level before the shootout was very low and it was sometimes frustrating to watch especially if you weren't cheering for any team. The ice maintenance was very good and I don't know if the workers could make any better, but the ice was still difficult for the players to play on.
